I've decided to copy Purple Penny Hunter's idea and create a survey to track the distribution of Changeover coins around Australia.

To complete the survey, please use the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8JR5J3C

I'll let you know the results once I get an adequate number of responses.

Many thanks. :)

I just checked the survey, and I've got 6 results so far. Please keep the responses coming, because I want my results to be statistically significant. :)

I've managed to find a few more 2016 coins, but just the regular ones.

In Brissy I've only got the C'over 50c so far, but I'm not noodling any more.

Would be interested in summary of results when a reasonable number of responses are in.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

While you will get an idea of where the changeover coins have landed the survey isn't going to give you a rough idea of volumes found is it Hercules (or have I got the wrong end of the stick)?

Hi Hercules,
The survey should give some idea of distribution at this point.
I think really good info would involve numbers of coins found, or even better, rates they are found at.
If I answered that I had found all denominations,  it would be correct,  however I have only found 1 damaged $1. For all I know it was purchased from the mint in one of the bags, but spent because it was damaged.
I have found heaps of 50c and fairly low numbers of the other denominations.
The stats you have been keeping and sharing are great, but not many people keep them.
Maybe a  more subjective question on how common each denomination is could provide some more interesting info too?
Eg "I am.likely to get this in change?" Or "How many rolls of this denomination would you have to noodle to be likely to find this coin?"
What do you think?

That's not the intention. Numbers aren't very useful, unless you know the number of coins people have searched through. Noodling and change finds would probably have to be kept separate, unless everyone is willing to keep a record of the number of coins of each denomination they've received in change.

It's easy to say you received two 50c Changeover coins in change, but unless I know how many other 50c coins you've received in change, the number of 50c Changeover coins is useless.

If you have any ideas as to how I could design such a survey, please let me know. I'm happy to start all over again, but in order to do what you want it to, the emphasis needs to be on rates rather than quantities, and this will probably be subjective unless other respondents keep stats like me.

Perhaps a better option would be to get one person in each capital city to noodle a certain number of coins of each denomination, and keep a record of the number of Changeover coins they find. Assuming there's enough interest, we could get people living in the country to do this as well. That way, we'd get a much better idea of what the geographical distribution of the Changeover coins actually is.

What do you think?

Is it possible to amend what I put in the survey?
Just found I had some $2 changeover and hadn't put that in.
So actually only 5¢ and 10¢ I haven't found (NSW country).

Hi Jeff,

I don't think you could amend it, unless you have an account with SurveyMonkey, and were signed into it when you submitted your survey. However, you could always try to resubmit it, assuming that it doesn't prevent you from doing so. Please try that and let me know what happens. Otherwise, I'll just have to make a note of it and remember to add it in when I post the results. :)

Hi Jeff,

I'm transferring the results across to Excel now so I can analyse them, and I've updated your response in the process. If anyone hasn't responded yet, please feel free to do so, because I need to get as many results as possible in order to make this work properly.

Hercules

Here are the preliminary results:

Sample size:
QLD: 4 (3 Brisbane, 1 regional)
NSW: 7 (5 Sydney, 2 rural)
VIC: 1 (regional)
SA: 2 (Adelaide)
WA: 1 (Perth)
Total: 15

Please note: The percentages indicate the number of respondents who found a particular coin in circulation, and does not reflect the actual number of coins in circulation in any particular geographical area.

Pedro

Looks like SA is the place to be for changeover coins.

Great!
Thanks Hercules for putting this together.
