To throw away the packaging

Like many I guess, I've a few NCLT dollar coins stashed away in packaging,  making it difficult to remember where any particular item is stored, and therefore difficult to view.

I'm trying to decide if it wouldn't be such a bad thing if I removed these coins from the packaging and placed them into albums, which in my opinion makes them easier to store, makes them more accessible and a better look overall.

From the point of view of moving these items on in the future, I'd be interested in hearing any opinions on whether or not this action may reduce future desirability of the items, or if I should just say to hell with it and place the coins in albums anyway, which is my preferred option.

To be more to the point, would a VC dollar be less desirable or worth less, if remove from the packaging?

By all means remove them from the packaging and store them the best way possible. Some RAM packaging is not good for coins anyway!
If you may want to sell them later then keeping the packaging could be desirable as some buyers would only want them with the original packaging. The real question then is how to remove them and keep the packaging intact. And do you sell them, in the future, back in the packaging or with the packaging available.

No simple answer that would suit everyone.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll go ahead and remove them when I get some more saflips. Even if there is a chance of their value dropping slightly, it's not going to be a disaster, and more than offset by a storage option that delivers increased efficiency, ease of access and better viewing :yahoo:

I have removed almost all my coins from the packaging. In many cases you can do this without damaging the packaging which I put aside and keep. The exceptions being a couple of PNC issues where the packaging is integral and actually might add some value to the coin - these are in a shoe box kept with my coin albums.

The RAM packing is in plastic storage boxes kept in the back of the shed. It takes up a bit of room, I think I have about 4 x 60 litre boxes of it.

Most of the offerings from the Mint can be safely removed from the RAM packaging without doing any harm to the coins or the packaging.
The coins can be added to your albums and the packaging stored separately if you so wished.
Personally I struggle to understand the "Fetish" of having everything in the original packaging especially if the packaging itself or the method of packaging causes the coins harm.

A lot of people like myself simply don't know whether the packaging will damage the coins, but we assume that the mint has learnt from its mistakes with the early mint sets. Some collectors like the original packaging, so why devalue your coins by removing it? :dontknow:

After you have been collecting for a while you will get to learn "First hand" which types of packaging will eventually harm a coin.
Don't Assume anything as far as the Mint goes, They don't give a Toss about if the packaging is safe for the coin or not.
As long as the packaging sells the coin they are happy and that is All that they are concerned about.
The $1 Mint your own coins are a prime example, Those open ended cards are totally inadequate as coin protection and toning and PVC damage is very likely over time.

Thanks for the input everyone. Have decided to go ahead and rehouse the coins that are still in sealed card holders, as anything that originally came with an open type folder is already removed.

Did a rough count, and I'm going to need somewhere between 120 - 150 saflips. All in the interests of housability, portability, accessibility, lookability :dodgy:

Don't know why I was so concerned, it's a piece of cake for most, especially the likes of the VC and Vietnam etc. :yahoo:

I've still got one I got at the Ekka back in 1995. The card they put it in was horrible, and the coin is now heavily tarnished. Unfortunately, you don't think of those things when you're a kid. :(

When I was at the 50th anniversary of changeover day at the Canberra mint last year, there was a HUUUUUGE crowd.
I had lined of for ages to mint my own coin.
As it came down to the tray, it flew out and landed on the ground.
A little boy about 3 years old with his parents in the line behind me picked it up with his gooey, chip covered fingers and handed it to me.
I had to thank him, but died a thousand deaths at the thought of this poor coin

I don't know whether to laugh or to cry, but I think I'll do both. :laugh2: :icon_cry:

Perhaps you should wear a glove next time and use your hand to prevent it from falling on the floor.

I keep one coin/set in it's original packaging and remove a coin/set from packaging and put into DANSCO Supreme Albums.

I am a firm believer that the resale value is kept by having the coin/coins in original packaging.   Take the VC coin, the folder is great but remove the coin from the folder, you just have a coin and I am sure that anyone who wants to buy one, wants the original item.

I have seen the VC coin resale at $295 in it's original packaging and a VC coin without packaging selling for as low as $15.00.

If one is in it for money, then packaged coin(s) are a must.

Welcome back Goldie, and hope your trip was enjoyable.

I agree with what you said, and whilst I don't have duplicates for all, I went ahead anyway.

Removing coins from the various packaging was actually much easier than anticipated, and only had to split a few cards to extricate a coin or two, such as the privy sets etc, although I did total a couple of PNC's. Anyhow, not to worry, as it's great having all the coins in one location and easily accessible albeit in two PP folders.

As most would be aware, for many of the cards and folders it was just a matter pushing the coin and its holder from the cardboard, something that was a pleasant surprise for me :yahoo:
