The 28 Sydney Olympic $5 coins were produced jointly by the RAM and the Perth Mint. Does anyone know which mint made which coins? Is there any way of telling by some tiny mark on them?

I always thought that all the coins in the 28 coin set were minted at RAM in Canberra

Well on the back of each coin card it says this ...

"The result of a collaboration between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint, this specially produced coin is part of a collection of 28 commemorative coins representing sports of the Sydney 2000 Olympics"

On the back page of the special album folder that I have got my 28 coins in, you will find the Logo's of the RAM and Perth Mint's.

So who made what? Seems like the question has never been broached before?

You could check the Mint determinations for 2000

You'd probably get further by asking the Perth Mint.

Me too ..... I have never heard the word broached before, now I know what it means. (though the other meaning of piercing a cask does sound more enticing).

Good Idea Trout .. They actually were minted over a few years from 1997 to 2000 even though they were all dated 2000. Some have the 3rd Portrait and some have the 4th Portrait of the Queen.

1997 Six were released (All Makleouf)
1998 Seven were released (3 Makleouf, 4 Rank-Broadly)
1999 Seven were released (All Rank-Broadly)
2000 Eight were released (All rank-Broadly)

From this it seems that the 4 Rank-Broadly coins released in 1998 were the first Australian coins to have the 4th Portrait.

Where can I get the Mint determinations from?

Interesting... I thought that each of the 28 designs could have either portrait, leading to 56 different coins.

brismike

I'm not absolutely sure that you are wrong Hercules .. I am only going on the coins that I have. If what you have said is correct there are a few more coins I need to get lol.

This is what mine are .... So if anyone has any that have different Obverses please let us know to confirm the doubt about the obverses.

Each coin had an issue number on the coin card ,  1 of 28, 15 of 28 etc, but as you can see they were not released in the order of the issue number. They were released in what seemed to be a completely random order. Although Coin 1 was the first one released, Coin 2 was not released until May 2000.

Interesting... My guess is that those released with the Rank-Broadly portrait would only be available with that portrait, but that those released with the Maklouf portrait could have either, depending on when they were minted. Does anyone know whether the ones released with the Maklouf portrait were updated to use the Rank-Broadly portrait once the initial stock sold out? :dontknow:

Ok I got a reply from the Perth Mint regarding the $5 Sydney Olympic Aluminium Bronze coins, This is what I asked them ....

Hi at the Perth Mint
Would you please be able to answer a question for me?
I have got the complete album of 28 Sydney Olympic Aluminium-bronze $5 coins. On the back of each coin card it says .....
"The result of a collaboration between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint, this specially produced coin is part of a collection of 28 commemorative coins representing sports of the Sydney 2000 Olympics"
On the back page of the special album folder that I have got my 28 coins in, the RAM and Perth Mint's logos are both displayed.
Does this mean that some of the coins were minted at the RAM and some were minted at the Perth Mint?
The coins were released from 1997 to 2000 but all were dated 2000.
If you could solve this query it will satisfy a lot of enquiring minds.

This is the reply....
Hi Michael - Thank you for your enquiry. As far as I am aware, although the Olympic coin series was a joint project between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint, the aluminium bronze coins were produced by the Royal Australian Mint. The gold coins appear to have been produced by the Perth Mint and the silver coins appear to have been a joint project (source: Pocket Guide to Australian Coins and Banknotes 16th Edition by Greg Macdonald)
Kind regards,
Aaron Gibbs |  Retail Customer Service Officer, perthmint.com.au

So looks like they were all minted at the RAM, although he is quoting a fairly old MacDonald's book but that does correspond with the latest one too. We just needed to confirm it.

I like the circular reasoning. :winkextra:

Did the silver ones actually have any sporting theme?

I have a set of the 28 UNC Al/Bronze coins which are all sporting.

The gold coins have sporting motifs.

But were the Silver ones purely about flora and fauna? Or am I mistaking this set for another?

Eight of the 16 Silver coins celebrate Australias unique fauna and flora, and the other 8 depict aspects of the nations cultural development.  The Royal australian Mint and the Perth Mint shared production of the coins.  Each is surrounded by a rich border of Australian flora.

From http://www.wynyardcoins.com.au/shop/australian-decimal-coins/royal-australian-mint/2000/ I've just grabbed the Mintmark and popped into a table below.
