I don't think PPH sells cardboard 2x2s, so I don't think I am stepping on toes.
If I am wrong please feel free to delete this thread.

Black Friday special, only good till Monday though.
Packs of 100 2x2s for $2.63 and orders under $200
shipped worldwide for $14.95. This is in Canadian dollars
which is about the same as the Aussie dollar.
If you buy $199 worth, that's less than 3c each, delivered.

Yeah, thanks to Steve for making the effort to inform but if they're Chinese sourced i would be wary as far as good/better quality Coins go.They are as cheap as chips on Alibaba esp. if you buy in bulk but who knows what materials are being used in the manufacturing.
German sourced 2x2 are tried and proven,i've still got sealed 2x2 from the 1970's,you have to cut the coin out of them. They were called 'mounting frames' or 'window mounts' back then, not sure when 2x2 became their popular name.

There aren't that many options. The ONLY thing that matters is the plastic, which should be BoPET (Mylar). The cardboard is irrelevant, but extremely unlikely not to be chlorine-free nowadays anyway. Even if it wasn't, the molecules wouldn't get through the Mylar, or for that matter BoPP if they used that instead. And as for adhesives.. just say "NO" and weld the damn things shut.

I don't agree Fulvio, who knows what production methods and materials are used in these 'Mylar' holders, all i know is that lots of Dealers/Ebayers are dumping stock over the last few Months.
Several sellers on Alibaba such as this one but MPO is not to put a coin worth more than a cent in them.

Well they have to be better than nothing, which is what I have now.
I'll let you know what they're like when they arrive.
Most of my coins are cheap circulation coins anyway.

Nothing ventured Nothing gained.
I don't Like staples anywhere near my coins, otherwise I would have given these a try myself.
It's not as if we are talking sheep stations here so not too much to loose But if these are any good then there is quite a lot to gain.
It will be interesting to see how these pan out, Keep us informed Mate :ok:

Me neither. That's why I started heat-sealing them. Self-adhesives have been a disaster for me, especially in the larger sizes. :(

There are a number of issues regarding quality, most of which are irrelevant.

'Mylar' (and other trade names) is BoPET. Which is PET film, the same stuff as coke bottles are made out of, which has been stretched in two dimensions. Chemically, ALL PET is:

There is no question of quality here. Its either PET, or it isn't. And since other plastics have different properties, its easy to tell.

The first 'quality' issue comes up with fillers. Fillers are inorganic materials, basically rocks such as Silica, Talc or Limestone added to the polymer to roughen it up. Pure polymer films are super-smooth, and will 'block' or stick together. Ever put two sheets of perfectly clean glass together then tried to pull them apart? The same thing happens when you roll plastic films, and it can be impossible to unroll them. So they add these fillers to make the surface jagged, which traps air in the roll and allows the film to slip. The problem is that rock is opaque. The more you add, the lower the optical quality of the film. It gets milky. So high-quality films are actually several layers, with filler only in the outer layer(s). The bulk of the film is unfilled, and perfectly transparent, while the very thin surface is rough enough to slip.

The second issue is with roll quality. Blocking is just one part of this, fixed as above. But films are not perfectly flat. There are distortions across the web as the film is drawn, and you get high and low spots. Depending on how the roll is wound, these thick and thin areas can produce ridges or corrugations in the roll. When unwound, the film can be 'baggy' where it was stretched. A good quality roll will therefore be of uniform size, shape and consistency, and will 'look good'. Not that the end user is going to see it, mind you.

Then there are coatings added for specific applications. Such as PVDC to provide extra barrier protection, especially for foods. Have a look at the list of applications at the bottom of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BoPET and note how many there are. However, note that coatings add cost. So its unlikely a manufacturer will use a more expensive film unless he has to.

Similarly, a manufacturer won't use a heavier-gauge film than necessary either. So it is possible that a cheaper product will use a thinner film, and this might be an issue. However, if its too light, it won't do the job, so its unlikely they'll take that shortcut. You can always ask, or check samples with a micrometer, anyway.

That's pretty much it for the business end of the product. Everything else is to a degree superfluous fluff, irrelevant to protecting the coins. The thickness, density and surface finish of the cardboard, the accuracy of the die cutting, any hairs, slivers, dags or dust from poor cuts, none of these have any impact on performance. Neither does the brand being stamped into the surface, nor the little tab being present or not. These are all cosmetic issues. And, along with 'brand', used to justify a higher price.

Just as with cars, shinier paint doesn't make it go any faster or run better, y'know? ;)

Will do.
At 2.84c each landed here in Perth, it was too good to pass up.
Especially when I'm on a tight budget.

I think I have a micrometer tucked away in the shed. I'll check that when they arrive.

I just received a message from the supplier, telling me they are cancelling my order. Seems it will coat them $180 just to mail it. I told them that is not my problem, they are the ones that quoted the prices and shipping and that they should honour their deal. See what happens now. :(

If they were sent via "Surface Mail" it would be far cheaper But it would take a fair bit of time for delivery.
The shipping price they are looking at is probably for registered Air Mail .

See if you can source them out of China. Postage is negligible, which is how so many companies can offer free postage.
