Why is there such a big market for these? I am looking at purchasing a 2013 Coronation $2 and a 2012 Coloured Poppy coin to complete my collection, but $50 for 2 coins seems a bit steep. Or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place to buy these coins.

I was pretty excited when the first commemorative $2 the Poppy coin came out But the shenanigans that have been a part of these ever since has soured that enthusiasm somewhat.
At one stage I feel that I was the only collector in Australia with a complete set of $2 coins from 1988 to date in proof and business strike until the poppy came to be

Low mintages for these fellers - 0.5m for the 2012 and about 1.0m for the 2013.

In UNC you should be able to get them for a little less than $50 for the two of them (eg off Ebay) but prices are steadily increasing.

On eBay I could not find a either of the coins under $25 each uncirculated

You should be able to get both of those for under $50, The "C" mintmark purple coin is the tough one

Noel - if you have the time available just to keep an eye on upcoming sales you should able to sneak some slightly lower prices on the 2012 (circa $21 - 22). It is getting harder on the 2013 but still the occasional one for about $23.

$30 for both in unc would be reasonable

There are 2 types of the 2012 red poppy coins.
The RSL coin and the "C" mintmark coin., the RSL coin had a mintage of 503,000 and the mintage of the "C" mintmark coin is only 40,902.

Hi Neolos
Is that a 1923 halfpenny pictured in your avatar?

i have almost given up on the coloured $2
I have a couple of the purples from the issue day that they did down at the mint and the Gov general was there and so on
but it was a BUY something and get one in your change arrangement
the hubby went down and came back with one or two for me, then i managed to get one from my prize (here this year) (fanks heaps to the donating member!!)

the red poppy i bought at the $10 each from a coin club member at the time they were released, so I have the donation cards as well
I often wonder if the RSL ever really saw much money from that coin - i think the sellers on greedbay and now greedfacebook are the only ones who were/and still are making making a tidy donation to their own bank accounts

Nevol

Have a look through this Dealers lists.  He seems to have some reasonable prices.

He is actually what I could loosely refer to as 'my' local coin dealer, but since he moved his shop a few years ago, I haven't been a customer, but as I now know he has parking at the rear of his store, I might surprise him one day.

He will not rip you off with high postage rates and you can even lay-by.

The coin pictured in my avatar is a 1930 penny. I've been meaning to change it for some time now to something more unique.

Back in 2012 I was only young and did not have the knowledge of coins that I do today. If I did, I probably would have purchased several Red Poppy coins, both 'C' mint mark and normal.
But because I didn't I will have to submit to the inflated prices (the people sure love their war memorabilia).

After 4 straight years of it I am a bit "over it" myself

cool
i can't make the picture larger to see what it was
i think it's pretty hard to get a coin much more unique than the 1030 penny - though!

some issues always cost more when you go to buy them a few years later
sometimes, others are cheaper than the issue price

i found that out when I made up my 50 c collection - for sure!!
