Retro revival raises the bar as chefs lift good ol' pub grub to new hip heights
Myffy Rigby
Good Food Guides National editor

A whole dining subculture has been born within some of the country's best bars, and Sydney's embraced it with open arms.

The years of lamenting over the death of the counter meal are at an end with the likes of the Unicorn, which opened earlier this year and is a finalist in The Sydney Morning Herald's Good Food Guide's best bar food category. An updated Australian pub from the folks behind craft brewery Young Henry's, burger meisters Mary's, and the Porteno crew, the Unicorn brings back the classic counter meal – roast pork, the mixed grill and possibly the greatest chicken schnitzel of all time – and amps it up to 11. ''I think the appeal of sitting at the bar is you can eat a few snacks, smash a few drinks, then piss off,'' says chef and co-owner Elvis Abrahanowicz, who credits the epic schnitzel to Mary's/Unicorn co-owner Jake Smyth.

Now he's into softer beverages. I saw this sign this morning and didn't have a clue what Unicorn Hot Chocolate is.

I made a guess and googled it when I got home. It is even more over the top than I envisaged.

If our Uni gets a royalty for every cup sold he would be a very rich quadruped indeed!
