You will buy all of them and become the new timbertop?

It will be interesting to see the clearance rate in this upcoming Universal Coin auction.

I think that they will do a lot better than they did the last time they were offered for auction :ok:

Quote from: 'trout' pid='99554' dateline='1475753477'Just imagine what would happen to the values of both the pre decimals and decimal coins if timbertop decided to sell all his sets at once :(

Pfff. It isn't his sets that I would be worried about but his spares. He has about 750 images and if you assume he has as many more without images (pre Trueview and whatnot) then he could dump a 1000 choice coins and still keep all his sets.
Worse yet is we had bidding wars Timbertop V Fenton, then we had Timbertop picking up some of Fentons coins; if Timbertop reverses course and either stops buying (like he added the MS67 1938 shilling last month) or starts selling his spares then it would just add to the selling pressure from ex Rare Coin Company stock that has helped depress prices these past 2 years.
Or he could use those spares to make Timbertop(2), Timbertop(3) etc and probably hold not just first place but 2nd, perhaps 3rd and perhaps 5 of the top 10 sets.

I wonder how old timbertop is ?
It would be nice to sell my meagre collection before his hit the market

It will take 5 years for the market to digest your Canberra florins.

I don't think it was just those two pushing values up, at least not just against one another. Possibly the best known 1920 dot over top penny (not the Fenton coin) sold at Nobles in 2006 for approx. $30,500 including commission. This coin does not show up in the PCGS population report or registry sets.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

Quote from: 'trout' pid='99172' dateline='1475138336'It looks like some of the Pre Decimals from the recent large sales of high grade coins are surfacing slowly on the market and are achieving better auction results now. :good:
This is a Good thing and can only help to improve Pre Decimal values but if you haven't taken advantage of the recent "Slump" in values to get those "Bucket List" coins then you may have missed out on some of the recent bargains.:(

Looks like Universal Coins is flipping the Fenton coins they bought from Noble through their Oct auction. They have set minimum prices all higher than realised prices + BP from Noble.

Any purchases from Universal auction ?

I just had a look at the auction results and it doesn't look like it went too well.
Heaps of coins passed in and no real surprises with the coins that did sell.

I thought some of the coins went cheap where as others went above market value...

No ausproof. I didn't bid on anything. As trout said, looks like a pretty poor result overall. Low clearance rate. I am only interested in florins lots. And over half passed in. Of the lots that did sell all were under $1k! None of the rarer early KGVs were sold.

I bid on 4 lots in Noble auction and were beaten by Universal in 3 (or may be 4). I can't see why I should now pay the winning bid at the Noble auction, plus their BP, and now Universal's BP plus some more. Considering that the Fenton auction was done by Universal through Noble.

As much as I like to own those, I am happy to save the money for some nice sovereigns. I am not obsessed with PCGS registry tbh. No such thing as a must have for me.

It's a buyers market at the moment Mate and anyway with the price of Gold at the moment getting a few sovereigns is not such a bad idea at all :good:

I think if you are a very dedicated PCGS set registry collector, then you must go for a top pop coin when it comes on the market. I think you just open yourself up to overpaying or worse exploitation. Would I like that 1915 florin? Sure... but I am just as happy with a rare Victoria shield reverse sovereign.

I see a lot of dissatisfaction for example, when RAM puts out too many $1 coin for people to keep up. So I decided that I am not going to be held hostage like that by insisting on having one of everything. I only buy things I like and there are more things I like that I can buy anyway. Why be forced to buy things you don't?

Sorry for the rant and being off topic... :P but I was a bit put out by the fact that Universal was bid against me in Noble auction.

spraggdean23

I picked up a few coins including the 1959m penny in 65rb which I won at my maximum bid which was lucky as I was at work when the auction was taking place. The coin looks really nice in the picture it will be good to see what it looks like in the hand.

Nice work... Got few coins myself ... have to wait and see what they look like in hand..
