why do you need $500 bag anyway?

Quote from: 'JeffH' pid='98397' dateline='1474360839'In a $500 bag of $1 coins this evening a Euro 50 cent and a New Zealand $1.
I put the grade of the kiwi as 'roadkill'.
If it is good enough for the bank to give something like that out then, I think, it is good enough for me to return it to them.

That is the standard size bag banks and security firms use for transferring the coins. For other denominations standard bag sizes are;
•1¢/2¢ $25 (could be mixed). Don't usually see those now.
•5¢ $100
•10¢ $100
•20¢ $100
•50¢ $200
•$2 $2,000
Returns from a Bank to security firm are usually loose (although my local bank branch often has them in the little zip-lock change bags -I bet Armaguard hates that). From security firm to bank are usually in rolls and, if they are in the little coloured, sealed 'baggies', then you have probably struck it lucky with a batch of uncirculated coins.
The bags have carry handles so it is a convenient way to get the coins to take home.

I'm always happy to give a loving home to any stray foreign coins that no one wants. :)

Thanks, Jeff. I worked it out. It's in the "Round 50c" thread.

Solomon Islands TWO DOLLARS coin today in a bag of $1 coins. Looks like they use same planchet.

Edit. Just checked and their new type $1 and $2 coins are minted in Australia and opposite sizes to ours (that is the $1 is the smaller -makes sense).

Nice find - apparently some people south of Brisbane were passing Solomon Islands $2 coins as Australian $1 coins a couple of years ago due to very favourable exchange rate.

So that's where they're all coming from! I know someone who noodles bags instead of rolls, and they've got so many Solomon Islands coins that they don't know what to do with them all. Unfortunately, the rolling machines remove them all before they get to me, so I don't have any. :laugh2:

I would have thought it would be more profitable to pass of Solomons $1 coins as Australian $2 coins. At current exchange rates a Solomon Islands $1 is worth AUD$0.18.

They can't pass them off as $2 coins, because they're the wrong size. Personally, I'd be quite happy with a 450% increase in value.

Maybe that's the way it went - I can't remember specifically.
I've only ever found one in my change anyway.

Got an NZ 20 cent from Woolies the other day. I swear it's about the 10th one I've gotten.

I bet they're pleased there wasn't a stampede for them! :)
