Anyone care to help with a grade for this coin just received today

Stevo,

It is always difficult to grade a top quality coin without it being in hand, but it is certainly an excellent example and well struck.

I always look for definition in the kangaroo and emu chin line on 50cents coins   and  the folds on the Queen's shoulders with the early decimal coins.

The rim looks clear with very few bag nicks  but what is the mark at the 5 o'clock position below the Queen's shoulder?  Is it a scratch off the inside of the rim or a slight defect in the blank that is reflecting the light in a different manner?

Cheers

Stevo,

Is that the same coin as you posted the photograph on CCF on 23/12 at 7 p.m.?

There seems to be significant differences between the two, or is it just photographic differences in lighting?

I reiterate, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, from the photograph supplied, to grade between UNC, CHUNC and GEM UNC without the coin in hand.

Cheers

I like the way your mind grades ( No MS BS in there ) :good:
I am prety sure that Steve beat me to this coin bacause I was mowing the lawn and missed out (Should have told me Steve, I could have saved you a few quid).
All I ever do with the 50 cent COA's is check the rims for knocks, the portrait , the sheild and the high points on the emu and roo.
This one of Steves is an abolute corker IMHO:yahoo:

Because the obverse fields are so large they often get scuffed. It can be very hard to see such breaks in lustre as well as small contacts from photos. This coin is also in a 2x2 which could impair the photo as well. This one does look very very nice though.

This one is a different coin and sold to me as GEM.It has one or two tiny marks in the obverse fields but is otherwise virtually perfect.I doubt that I will find a higher grade circulation coin

Righto Stevo,

So what is the mark at the 5 o'clock position between the rim and the Queen's shoulder?  Is it a reflection from the mylar cover or a peculiarity of the coin blank?

It is certainly a nice coin (as was the other one you posted).  It would be interesting to put it up against some of the 50 cent coins released by the RAM in the 1973 UNC sets which were removed from the PVC folders early on and placed in 2x2s for preservation.

Looks like a mark left on the mylar of the 2x2 from the rim of the coin :good:

Hard to be certain from a photo so, best send it to me and I will give my considered (but not necessarily expert) opinion. :tease:
I would be happy to have that one.
