North Macedonian (Paeonian) Coin

Hi everyone

It has been an incredibly long time since I have been on these forums proper so what better way to make a comeback than with a purchase I made on the 8th of January 2016 from Stacks and Bowers.

The following is a coin of Northern Macedonia otherwise known as Paeonia (Kingdom of the 7 northern Macedonian tibes)

Indicated in this map by Independent Macedonian Tribes which by the time of this coin was united after years of fighting with the Kingdom of Macedonia (9 southern Macedonian tribes)

Patraos, 340-315bc, Damastion Mint (possibly Astibos)
Graded by NGC as MS* 5/5 Strike, 4/5 Surface

On the obverse we have the Macedonian Sun God (equivalent to Apollo) which is symbolic of the most important god to the Macedonian people before Christianity.

On the reverse is a scene of Ariston (prince of Paeonia and leader of the light cavalry) spearing Stratophates (the Persian Commander) through the throat during a river crossing in Alexander the Great's campaign against Persia.

This coin is magnificent not only due to the history but the fact that the majority of these coins suffered from a range of issues in terms of strike and engraving, as mostly enslaved greeks captured during the Macedonian conquest of Persia where forced to cut the dies and mine the silver for these coins.

I am not into these types of coins but when one has read the history of the coin above, then these coins look interesting.

There is a lot of work/enjoyment that goes into not only finding these coins But the history associated with them takes a bit of effort to hunt down as well.

Thanks everyone. Working on a big acquisition in mid April (http://coins.ha.com/itm/greek/ancient-coins/macedonian-kingdom-alexander-iii-the-great-336-323-bc-av-stater-19mm-860-gm-6h-/p/3046-42004.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515) so see how that goes may need to sell of a few coins to finance it as well as a possible lay by plan with Heritage. Also correction the date is in fact 335-315bc not 340-315bc.
