My computer has up graded itself, (I know, it can't do it by itself), to Windows 10 and I have a problem.

Lets say I am reading something within this forum and it has a link to a photo or something.   I go to that photo and the only way I have found to get out of it is to exit using the "X" in the very top right hand corner and exit to my desktop and then come back into the forum.

Has anyone any idea how I can get back to my original screen without booting out to desktop?

Thanks in advance.

It can do it by itself unless you deliberately rejected the free upgrade offer.
I did reject the offer. My retrospective advice is; Don't go there -whoops, too late!

I know absolutely nothing about the whole I.T. thing goldie, but our system is the same as yours and is under the complete control of my wife, but in your situation it's just a matter of right clicking on the relevant tab in the top task bar and closing the screen you're in. Hope that helps, but I bet you knew that. :)
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

when I click a photo here
it opens up something like a new page
so I click that page closed and the forum remains the same

this one just popped up on my facebook wall
I thought about this thread!! ha ha

Try pressing Esc which should exit the window or if you have opened it in a second window you can get back to it by pressing alt tab at the same time.  If you hold down alt and tap tab you can cycle through all open windows.

OK thanks one and all.   Will give those advices a go.

Another reason to boycott Windows 10.

I tried to load some upload some photos from my camera, to a computer with Windows 10, yesterday.
NO GO! Explorer recognises the camera -even tells you details of memory card utilisation- but insists no files on the memory card. A little research revealed that many Fuji and Nikon cameras are affected.
The problem has been known for at least three months and requires upgraded firmware for the camera. In the case of my Fuji camera new firmware is anticipated in December (some models have had new firmware released already).
Apparently there is no problem extracting photos from the memory card if the computer has a suitable card reader. The computer in question has a multi card reader except it does not take SD cards, which my camera has. I had to trot the camera home and load the photos on a USB stick with my Windows 7 computer.

Something to be aware of if you are considering the upgrade. Check that your camera(s) is compatible first. Or if you already have windows 10 and want to buy a new camera check first that it will be compatible.
PS. A windows 10 upgrade can be rolled back to the previous version of windows within 30 days -existing windows files are all retained during the upgrade, to allow this.

Edit. I have just had a look on eBay and USB card readers can be purchased for less than $2, including postage. Internal card readers (mount in a 3.5" floppy cutout) are less than 410, including postage.

410 what? Dogecoins? Satoshis? Bottletops? Empty chip packets?

Yeah, yeah, I know it was supposed to be ten bucks... but it gave me an excuse to post this advice to anyone even remotely considering Winblowz 10 either as an 'upgrade' or on a new machine:

Windows 8,8.1 & 10 were designed for touchpad applications
Horrible OS for a laptop
Stick to 7
Buy what gives you enjoyment

I guess it's out of place for me to say I have a new laptop with Windows 10 and like it. I've had computers over the years with every version of Windows except for 8 and 8.1. The absolute worst was Windows Millennium.  On my last laptop I had Windows 7 for over 5 years. It was bought new with that OS installed.
In this country many people say the best version of Windows ever was XP, and lots of folks still run it even though Microsoft no longer supports it.

I like Windows 10. The auto switching between tablet and desktop mode was what Windows 8 and 8.1 should have done in the first place.

The big issue with 10 is not whether people like it or not. Its what's going on under the hood. The amount of spying it does on unsuspecting users is simply unforgivable, whether it looks or works nicer than 8.

Mind you, this is not just a Microslop issue. Apple and Google are just as guilty with their offerings. Because the vested interests of vendors is diametrically opposed to those of the users.

Since we are users, and not software publishers, we need to keep sight of that, and choose our tools appropriately. That's why I don't use Android, and I don't use any Apple OS past OSX 10.6 and iOS 7 (and even that reluctantly, since it came preinstalled on my latest devices). My one and only PC runs XP to do the one job its there for, and will never be 'updated'.

Yes, I won't update because of the spying issues, and the ability of the police to access your information over the internet.

Its childs play,at Police & Govt. Agency level, to access any computer online but 10 and to a lesser extent 8,have the ability to report back to a central data bank, like the ''Person of Interest" scenario, that searches for key words, phrases, names, email info, websites etc.The big worry are laptops/tablets  accessing other laptops in its WiFi range, innocent members of the public getting dragged into the murky world of espionage and in some cases set up as a patsy.
Anyway providing your not designing a bomb or having the plans to the local Bank on your Win 10 computer you will be just another member of the public Govt's. are trying to protect. My naive take on it all.

Umm, no, not quite.

There are several layers that need to be penetrated to 'access' any device.

First, you have to have a 'physical' connection. That means being able to reach it. If its off, the network cable is unplugged or its WiFi is out of reach, its 100% insulated from any access, legitimate or otherwise.

Then there is the network connectivity issue. The router its connected to can be set up in a multitude of ways, and access through it will vary depending on its settings.

Assuming the right ports are open, you may indeed be able to reach a given machine, but that doesn't grant access. As with routers, computers and other devices can be set up anywhere from fully open to fully locked. For example, I have a single XP machine, which runs TeamViewer so that several people can access it and control the crypto miners connected to it. Its the least secure machine on my network, and since it has no access to anything else, and nothing stored on it other then the mining software, I don't care.

No, the big issue with external access is malware deliberately and surreptitiously placed on a machine. The LEAST secure machines all run Windows, which has always been riddled with security holes and literally millions of malicious bits of software collectively referred to as malware. What's different now with 10 is that the operating system itself has become malware by deliberate design.

And that is a massive red flag which should put off anyone with the slightest bit of common sense and stop them ever running it or anything like it.

Of course, there are some people to whom the phrase "Hi, I'm from the Government, I'm here to HELP you!" doesn't send shivers up their spines. These are the same people who let the nice Indian man calling from Telstra install remote control software on their computer, lock them out of it, then demand hundreds or thousands of dollars to let them back into their own machines.

Computers are just like Governments... you get what you deserve! :diablo:
