Hey Folks, As I have indicated a few times before, I am trying to complete my Sixpences set. I wanted to get some options from you all about the rarest and hardest coins to get to complete my set. Looking at bluesheet for rough values for the coins in higher grades, some of the known rarer coins have lesser values compared to others .. Ie 1922 in MS65 has a higher value compared to 1918 etc.

What coins do you think are harder to get ? Any comments will be very much appreciated! :wavemulticolor:

Not an area I'm too familiar with but have noticed as no doubt you have the 1935 mintage was less than others. Maybe this is one for later on?
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

Thanks autocoupler, yes 1935 is a very hard to get in high grade.  However it seems 1935 has more coins in high grade than some of the other earlier dates.. may be due to low mintage people put some away ?

Would people back then even know if that years mintage was low? After a few years they may notice not many '35s in their change and decide to keep an eye out for a nice one, but by then it is too late and any they find are less than Unc.

oh my florin

Wouldn't 1915 be th hardest Sixpence technically?

Maybe not. Who knows if any pattern 1915 sixpences were struck and are in the forgotten bottom drawer of the Royal Mint archives or the estate of some Heaton Mint employee. Same as I'm sure most here would have dismissed the possibility of a 1927 Canberra shilling until one popped up.

wwwww

The 1918-M is relatively common in top grades, there was a roll of them that was broken up by Sherwood in the 90s.

1922s are reasonably common in lower mint state grades too, they used to be often undergraded on the raw coin market due to their typically soft strike which accounts for their reputation as a scarce date. In MS65 they're very rare however, primarily due to their typically poor strike quality.

1911, 1914, 1916-M, 1920-M, 1923, 1924, 1925 are the hardest dates in top grades with the last very underrated.

Thank you Walter, as always very informative .....:yahoo:

It seems I have a big challenge in my hands to get some good coins to compete the set.

When? Is it related to the obverse only strike of the Canberra florin portrait mentioned in old Renniks books?

I shouldn't have read this thread. Made me realise how many holes I have in my collection of Sixpences. :(

Actually, I just went and checked the book and most of the ones I thought I needed are not minted, I only need 1943D. :)

Haha more so if OMF is in a joking mood :P

I find 1934 to be extremely hard to come by in top grades...I don't remember seeing one above MS 64 in the last 2-3 years... I also think 1952 is bit over rated ...
