This probably should be in another thread, but here seemed apt. Agreeing with all of above re what and what not to do with grubby and dodgy coins, and only having purchased one slabbed coin in the past, I recently picked up my second. Hopefully it's a nice 1981 2 cent no SD, of course it's in a APCGS slab :yahoo: The reason for my confidence is that the seller said APCGS standards are much higher than that of PCGS :scared::blum3::biggrin:

You know how it is when you're looking to fill that last hole  Will post a pic when it arrives. I'm feeling lucky :yahoo:

It probebly looks a lot better in hand but from those images all my MS65 coins look better than that one.

There's not even a step.

interest

Quote from: 'interest' pid='88966' dateline='1463827140'It appears that the stuff on this coin is either varnish or lacquer
have used some WD40 on it & have been able to remove a bit of it as you can see, bit of a shame really.

Quote from: 'interest' pid='88914' dateline='1463751177'Any suggestions regarding removing the gunk!

So it has gone from that to this & I might leave it alone now.

That came up rather well, looks ok to me.

Compared to how it was yeah looks a lot better.
That was using the acetone.
Now I'll just leave it.

Have you tried to clean it up a bit with the use of an ultrasonic cleaner,?

Excellent job interest :good: I take it the obverse didn't have the gunk.
A wise person knows there is something to learn from everyone.

I am in the process of doing my complete pre decimal collection of coins in an ultrasonic cleaner using water, a dash of liquid soap and a slurp of cloudy ammonia.

OK, so some will attack me for doing this but the dirt etc that was on the coins I have done has almost disappeared and I do not rub the coins with anything but my fingers.

The florin collection really does look tops compared to what they originally looked.

The collection is a circulated coin collection so I can't see the harm in getting rid of the dirt etc.

It did but nowhere as much as reverse that came up looking quite good. I'm happy to leave it now.

I don't have access to an ultrasonic cleaner,

Nicely done Rob. Was some kind of friction required as encouragement, or did the gunk just dissolve and disappear.

They are your coins Goldie and what you do with them is entirely up to you But I would definitely NOT recommend doing this to any collector if the intention is  to keep the coins originality .
Regardless of the sonic cleaning , just rubbing a coin with your fingers will leave minute if not major marks on a coin especially silver or copper coins.
Many a coin has been forever ruined by well intentioned people in  the past and  this will continue to happen I suppose.
All we can do as collectors is to advise people how to handle, Store and generally look after the coins in their collections as best we can. :ok:
