I have two different types of S counterstamps on 2005 Gallipoli coins. One is clear and tidy "S" and the other seems like it has been struck with a poor quality "S" stamp. I believe the poorer quality S has been counterstamped with the mobile press in Sydney when the clear stamp is pressed in Canberra mint.
Also G Mac book describes one counterstamp that has been pressed in the pacific stamp show in Sydney and is the most valuable of the S stamped coins. How does that differ from the Sydney S counterstamp?

Heavy counterstrike is from Canberra Mint
Light counterstrike is from the portable press

yes but if the Sydney mobile press and the more valuable pacific stamp coin show have been both pressed with a mobile press how can I tell the difference?
Also i noticed that the mobile press is often poor quality and some even seem to have some sort of double strike.

There was no mobile press at Australia Pacific Explorer Stamp Show in 2005

Yeah there was a mobile press at the Australia Pacific Explorer Stamp Show, I purchased counterstamped coins & PNC's  from that show.
I have pointed out in the past that the only difference between the
Australia Pacific Explorer Stamp Show coin & the ANDA show coin is a mark on the rim of the  Obveres at about 4 to 5 o'clock, that occurred when the mobile press punched the "S".
There are photo's on here somewhere.

Just had a look at my one and only "S" mobile press dollar. It has the diagonal mark on the rim at "I" of AUSTRALIA, but the "S" is of the type as shown in the other thread as being the ANDA coin. There is also doubling on one side of the incuse  circular punch area. I think I'm confused Rob  :scratch_one-s_head:

The coin was an ebay purchase so I can't say where it's from.

Would this tend to suggest that the mark on the rim may have originated at the RAM and batches of this coin were sent to both events?
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

From the coins that I know of that definitely came from the EXPO all have that particular mark on the rim.
These are coins that are spread over the three day period.
The punch as we all know can vary between coins punched in a group of say ten coins, but that mark seems to remain consistent over the three days.

NOW.....

Back in the days of the original RAM forum, (WOW this is over ten years ago,) there was a group of guys who first bought this mark to the attention of, that then forum on the Friday night first day of Expo, so as dedicated collectors of varieties & error coins they made sure that they secured coins from all three days.
So these coins were then compared to the ANDA coins also secured over three days.
The mark on the RIM was no longer in evidence.

I'm sure there are other people on this forum who were also on the original RAM forum apart from Goldseeker & myself, who would remember this.

But gee, wouldn't it be easy if the Mint was to put a different cover on coins that had the same counterstamp. I mean they do 5,000 for each show, but I guess the price of printing would prohibit that.

The original RAM forum ended in 2004 then Ken Skinner alias secret squirrel started his own forum blah blah ...
