Quote from: 'oh my florin' pid='75534' dateline='1436700676'Nice trout. The Maundy coins seem to be very beautifully toned in general (due to the velvet bag or box they are kept in?) Otherwise keep an eye out at Heritage and you can find some really nicely toned coins in general.

Those velvet lined boxes can be Buggers to coins , remember what they did to the 1966 proof sets and everyone just had to dig them out every now and then with their fingernails and grotty fingers  :dash1:
The Maundy sets seem to fare better , I think because they are so small and light that there seems to be less friction rub problems with them and being so delicate most people were afraid to handle them.
I have bought a couple of "blast white" sets that I now fear have been dipped in the past and they fade away into the shadows when put up against a naturally toned fully lustrous coin :yahoo:
In reality these are a purely NCLT/Grannybait coin But they were one of the first to be produced by the Brits (as far as I am aware) and they are exquisite with a real sense of history about them.
Yes I am "Smitten" by them But hay that's collecting  for ya :)

I just received another 1905 set, Nice coins but I'm a little concerned at the lack of toning on these.
I bought them mainly to get a 3d coin for my other 1905 set that didn't grade.

I just picked this 1905 set from the Post office (Mrs Trout Picked it up for Me).
Really darkly toned but the lustre is glorious , I even got the ratty old box the coins had been stored in.

I have a 1906 set on its way from Greece and should be here next week some time :good:
I also have two sets awaiting grades at PCGS, another 1905 set and a 1883 set.
These have been there since 25/8/15 and I should get the results shortly (I hope) :)

Here are the images as promised.
I am having problems looking through my viewfinder with this blocked up head of mine that's why these are not up to my usual standard.
These have amazing lustre and on a bad day at PCGS they will grade at PL66 :ok:

Very nice Troutski!

The first pics are a bit fuzzy but the last ones are good photos. (Well to me at least).

Hope the head clears up soon.

These are very interesting. I have to be honest that I didn't know anything about these really so I spent some of last night reading up on them and searching for some for sale. Amazing how reasonably priced some coins from the 1600's are. Its a nice collection you are growing.

For what they are and the tiny mintages, they are surprisingly affordable :good:
But like any other coin the GOOD ones are pretty tough to find.
If you are thinking about going into these stay away from the AT offerings mainly from the US and most of the really darkly toned coins .
Also if the coins are Blast white , they have probably been dipped .
You CAN find nice coins in the darkly toned and blast white ones but to be on the safe side look for the coins with a "Pastel" tone without surface hits/marks :ok:

I agree that they are an affordable collection and you have given us some wonderful examples of them but I don't see myself getting them.

Who knows what next year holds though..

I bought these from a well known dealer graded Ch Unc , 3 went Unc Details (Cleaned) and one went AU Details (cleaned).
I must have had my beer glasses on when I sorted these to send to PCGS :dash1:
I put my faith in the dealers grades thinking they knew better than me and ignored what was in front of me.
I won't do that again

Yes that set of Mark looks rather nice :)

I would rather Not say who i got the cleaned set from as I haven't had a problem before
with these people and I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they just made a mistake
with these.
I will see what happens when I send them back for a refund :ok:
