Hello,

The Landy was only a temp. thing to raise money after the war, it used an 80 inch wheelbase, same as the Jeep. GP General Purpose is how it was named. As there was a steel shortage the body of the Landy was Aluminium which had been made for Aircraft industry which was now in abundance. The Pom's also exported farm machinery to do the same. Australia is the home for this stuff, because of the cost to remove it was left in fields when its time was up. In the UK most was scrapped.

I prefer Jap. 4WD's, but let us look at the Rangie. It was decades ahead of its time. Came out in 1967, Coil suspension and all wheel drive V8. Same as all the big names now. Even the styling of the original one is still OK nearly 50 years later. They got it right and left it alone ! Going from 2 door to 4 door was about the only major change in decades.

Does anyone remember the Film " The Gods must be crazy " ? There were many funny scenes based around the Landy. My info is from memory, so if there is an error here please Post an update.

sure do ... one of the funniest movies at the time
just the sound of the  landy idling was good... and the scene where he had to open the gate with no brakes and the landy rolled down the hill :laughingneqw::laughingneqw: and back

Hello,

What about the winch ! Both Films were good, although the clumsiness was over-done in the second. Yellow Beard was another of the era I liked, although it was considered a flop . It mixed British and American humour, which most didn't get. Here in Aus, we know both though.

I just had a set of Yokohama ATS tyres fitted to the landy, I donated the pretty much brand new road tyres to my daughter for her car and saved her over $1000 :good:
There is nothing wrong with the tyres I took off but I consider road tyres on a 4WD is pretty much the same as wearing ballet shoes to a rugby match
With the new tyres fitted I took the car into the sand hills for the first time and the first thing I noticed is that the car is permanent 4WD .
The only selection available on the transfer box is High , Neutral, Low with a diff lock option in both High and Low.
I didn't even look like getting bogged :yahoo:
I have owned many 4WD cars (we have 3 parked in the yard now) including a lovely little Toyota Surf that I loved to drive but blew the motor in :cray:
The Disco is pretty much a Surf on Steroids with more "Creature Comforts" , I am pretty happy with this vehicle so far :)

Hello,

You have an " all wheel drive " like the first Rangie rather than a 4 WD then ( by definition ). The Center Diff is the difference between the two. This is to avoid axle wind up ( I am sure you know that ) I find it funny watching some young bloke with a welded diff making a tight turn, I wonder what will break first, the axle or diff. An LSD or locker is the solution for them. I had a locker in my Rocky, bit of a pain on sealed roads though.

oh my florin

Seems rather appropriate that I am looking for my first car now. Going for a Mitsubishi FTO.

I can still remember my first car.
It was a second hand  EK Holden station wagon I picked up for $100 at Young's Motor's in Geraldton back in 1971.
It had all the bells and whistles , a heater and a radio were as good as it got back then , I loved it and thought that I was " as flash as a rat with a gold tooth" driving that around :yahoo:
I think I polished most of the paint off that car, for a 17 year old kid back then $100 was an absolute bloody fortune
