This has just come to my attention.

Read all about it here 2015 $10 Gallipoli Landing Centenary Silver Commemorative Coin then immediately close the link.

I saw the advertisement when putting some old papers in the recycling bin, where they remain until collection tomorrow morning.

Yeah I had a different one a couple of weeks ago, very sad and hope too many don't get caught. My brother asked about them and I told him they're a total ripoff and after explaining they're useless rubbish and maybe worth $2.50 if your lucky he decided not to get one.

Yeah you give me $10 and I'll give you $2 in silver that you can't even cash in in australia at the bank if things get tight..can't they be shut down for misleading :scratch_one-s_head:

where's the lot that dictate who can use anzac theme, but I suppose as long as they get a few bucks they'll let anyone make money from them. The profits should get to legacy or some lot that help war veterans as our government doesn't want to do anything except wipe their hands after they serve their country.

I'm keen on this and it's expansive flan.

In other news Macquarie Mint products seem to be well sought on the Facebook page. Anyone keen to discuss should really go there :P

Edit: Jeff!!! You can't say ANZAC.

Now now no need to be like that PP :winkextra:
Be a nicer coin if it had australia written on it and was a fifth of it's price, $500 is a bit out of my price range :(

Hardly a fair comparison between those two coins. Although the $10 one actually gives you more silver per dollar.
The other one looks good but, if I wanted a picture, I would buy a nice, limited edition print.

They do have one thing in common -GRANNY BAIT. One for rich grannies and one for granny pensioners.

I love silver coins and keep any different one I can get my hands on. Mostly circulation so I have very few .999.
I think that metal speaks for itself and, to best show off the silver the coin needs a simple and elegant design. Why detract from the lovely lustre of silver by painting it?

Umm, no. I got banned from there for calling a spade a shovel. I should have just called it a blatant con designed to rip unsuspecting noobs off.

Maybe its just me, but blatant abuses of power seem to be increasing everywhere lately. Seems if there's a dollar involved, morality just goes right out the window.

As for MM, their junk mail isn't even good for dunny paper or firelighters. Complete and utter waste of space.

Oh so very true, so no it's not just you or it could just be us pair but I yes see it and like you find it a little unsettling to say the least :(

Yes I don't mind the odd pad print but not all and I agree Jeff :good: why spoil a good coin :dash1:

You know its funny because I am sure that when the 1934/35 florin came out for 1 shilling over face value I am sure collectors were saying the same thing hence why so many got melted down and in general they didn't get looked after well.
Not saying I like the Macquarie mint but things like this can become collectable as not one collected them

Yeaaaahhhh.. ummm.. no.

There's a big difference between 'real' coins which are overlooked and underloved (say 2011 $2 for example), and obscure grannybait with no real purpose in life other than to rip people off.

I'm not saying some of this stuff isn't beautiful, because it certainly is. But we're not (well, most of us anyway) beautiful knick-knack collectors, we're COIN collectors. And as such, they must, first and foremost, actually BE coins.

Granny bait aren't coins. They're trinkets shaped like coins, produced for the specific goal of making vast markups and milking the cash-cows we're perceived to be. And yes, I include the "real" mints in this group of ne'er-do-wells, along with the con merchants like Macquarie.

And why do I have a problem with silly people being milked? Because it depletes their reserves, which stops them being able to buy 'proper' coins, and eventually drives them away from the field when they realise how much they've lost.

Not everybody can get rich in any field, but nobody deserves to be savaged to make the fat cats fatter. At the very least, what you collect should retain its value, not diminish it.

I wouldn't disagree with you Fulvio as I dont like them myself for the same reasons you outlined, I just wonder sometimes if the decisions we make today on what we collect will haunt us 40-50 years from now.
for those of us still here :)

Heh. Some of mine haunted me 40-50 DAYS from then.

like the time when I messed up and double-ordered these: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251855457393

The value is just about the same as I paid for them all those years ago, and only because of the silver price going up. For most of that time they were worth less than half what I paid.

OK, this is a bad example. I screwed up and accidentally double ordered. AND I knew what I was buying, and only bought it in order to have such a massive item, not under any delusions of it being valuable. Kind of like the gold egg I have. And anyway, we're allowed the odd foible and error, right?

I'm more concerned for those newcomers who don't know any better, and who get in pretty deep before anyone tries to throw them a life-line. Like, for example, most of the people in that FB group. :(

Honestly a quick Google search would provide them with a wealth of information on the subject and access to some of the most active collecting forums where they can learn from others. The coin collecting community is very supportive of newcomers in my experience and all they need to do is be proactive in not getting duped.
However some people love that stuff. I have several "granny bait" coins in my collection that I enjoy owning but will never be collectable so each to his own.
