There are a lot of die markers we can use to identify authentic coins, here is a list of some, feel free to add your own.

1852 Adelaide Pound trials: no 5 dots above 22 CARATS (those with 5 dots were restruck, probably by David Gee) - note this doesn't apply to regular Adelaide Pounds, of which later strikes often have the 5 dots.
1922/21 Threepence: blob in front of the Kangaroo's groin.
1923 Half Penny: flat based lettering
1930 Penny: top arch of a 2 underneath the 3 in date (yes all 1930 pennies are overdates - even the proofs).
1934 Proof Penny: horizontal die polishing line going right of the top line of E of ONE
1938 Proof Threepence: die polishing striations in the form of a 2mm cross between the first and second wheat stalks.
1938 Proof Florin: pimple about 3mm above the eyebrow of King Geo VI

1959 Proof Florin: no blob under emu
1963 Proof Threepence: thick, even reverse rim

Do you know of any for more common coins Walter or that's sort of the main fake list? Thanks mate.

It's also funny how many denominations they over dated, could make an interesting thread and I only have one and that's a 33/32 penny.

Common coins are generally struck from multiple dies and as such die markers are not as useful.

Yeah that's what I was thinking so we call them varieties.

Not always true for the rarer ones though. This is a timely thread as I recently purchased a 1919 Double dot penny on ebay, and went down the usual path of checking for the commonly known die marker on  this particular coin, that is the disturbance just above the first "A" in AUSTRALIA.

When the coin arrived I gave it the once over and it checked out Ok, a nice coin for this type and what I paid. I was then surprised to spot a small cud on the outer right side circumference of the "O" in OF. Not ever having read anything about this posible die marker I set about checking other coins on the internet as well as the one and only other 1919 double dot I had.

Guess what? They all displayed the same cud. My ebay coin below.

Good one,i haven't noticed that before and i've been collecting them(except for a moments of weakness when Ebay first started in Oz. and i was getting $80+ for average egs.) since i found one on my paper run/route in the early 1960's.Next time i have them out i'll check the lot. This is one i have handy and its looks like there is something going on with the 'O' in 'OF'.

Edit....great find..the six i've checked so far all have the cud on the รถ.The top dot varies in size and some have a moat but the bar over A and your find of the 'cud' on the O are consistent so far on mine.I'll check the rest when i get some time. A couple of more Pics.

Well spotted, now that you mention the double dots, the 1920 double dot has a line that sticks inside the W in Commonwealth.

yes - it is often used to disqualify the 1920 rare 'dot above' when only one dot remains

That's interesting info on the 1930 penny wwwww, I'm most likely destined to never own one though.

A couple on the rarer coins.
On the 1931 Dropped 1 Indian Obverse Penny, after the S in GEORGIVS there is a dot.

Also, on the 1916 I Half Penny muled with 1/4 Anna Obverse, there is a dot on the inside of the inner rim above the last stroke of the N in ONE on the reverse.
