They sound pretty good Jeff.

I remember when I was a young'n I had a GB Galant (which had twin head lights). Did lots of country road night time driving and ended up putting some aircraft landing lights in the high beamers. (Dad had to install a relay too of course). They were fabulous .... could see at least 1.5k ahead.

Mount them all on a roof bar. :)

That's a bit overkill Steve seeing I already have a pair of Hellas on the bulllbar.

Uni,
I had a Datsun 180BSSS -the homologation rally special model with similar lights and fitted halogen inserts in all four positions. Also had a pair of Cibié Super Oscars. Slight problem...the pissy little 35 amp alternator could not keep up with 510 watts of lighting with everything on. I ended up wiring the low beam relay to turn off if the high beam + driving lights were on -low beam didn't make any difference then anyway. When I went for a pink slip once had trouble convincing the mechanic that was deliberate and not a fault.
I presume the factory team fitted a bigger alternator as they had four of those monster lights across the front. Here is an alternate solution....

That Pic. brings back memories Jeff,i was involved in Rallying for nearly 15 years, late 1960's to early 1980's,i had 3 Datsun 1600's in  that period.
We used the alternators out of the 240Z or the 240C Sedan, they were around 100amps IIRC.
There was a rule change in the 1970's,not sure if it was CAMS or NSW DMT requirements, where you were only allowed 2 extra lights over standard.Several competitors took out the inside HB lights on the Datsuns(as shown in your Pic.) and added 4 Cibie's,some Scrutineers allowed that, some didn't.
HFY,in the lower Pic., was our fastest car, several top 10 finishes in State Rounds and a top 10 finish in the 1975  Bega Valley ARC round,we were later excluded from the results because we were honest as stating the Engine CC as 1950cc which was too far above the standard specs of 1595cc,most of the Datsun 1600 competitors in that Rally had overbored and stroked 180B motors which weren't declared.

Yes the P510 (Datsun 1600) was probably the most popular rally car of the era.

I ran quite a few club rallies in the late sixties and early seventies. First with a 998 Mini and later with a Hillman Imp. The mini was rather modified and managed to reach 7,000 rpm in top gear once; the Imp also managed to reach same revs in top gear but stock standard motor -they were a rather underrated car. Both took rather a long run up to get that speed (better than 100mph).

Yeah, after the Rally ban in NSW,1969/70?,we moved from the Shire roads into the Forests and that left most Mini's struggling on the rougher fire trails. There were a  couple of competitive Imps around that time, lots of UK sourced 'go faster' bits that helped them, esp. on the wet and greasy Forest tracks.
We gave away regular competition in the late 1970's but still did the occasional Rally up to the early 1980's.Main problem around that time was the appearance of 4WD cars,Patrols,Landcruisers etc, on the course late at night, offroad driving was just starting to get popular in Oz. and often they would be camped and hear/see the Rally cars and try and get off the course and only make things worse.
We had a couple of close shaves so along with getting a new Main Frame Computer job that required w/end work  we gave it away.Fond memories of great days.

Yeah, great little project for someone but good luck getting that registered in NSW/Vict.

Does anyone check fuel prices on the Government Fuel check sites?
Quite amazing the differences. In Mudgee, at the moment, the difference between the highest and lowest prices equates to $20 for me to fill a near empty tank in my car.

Yes Jeff, our local Coles seem to be really having a go at motorists lately, about 165c. The BP at KEW has been selling for about 139. It's a huge difference. The Woolies at Taree is around 159 but the Woolies at Lakewood (near Kew) is over 10c less, obviously to compete with the Kew BP.

JeffH

This article in today's paper was the prompt for me to check fuel prices today. Call to stop gouging at the pump

Indeed. The ABC had a Coles spokesperson on the other day and they tried to justify their price by saying that there was the 4c per litre discount offer plus the 10c per litre one when people purchased more than $20 in the servo store. Perhaps if they dropped their prices people might stop to buy something in their store.

Triggersmob

Yes, we use Fuelwatch every week. In Perth we have weekly price cycle
and Monday is always the cheapest. This week fuel was about $1.19 per
litre and we got 4c off with our Woolies card.

Yes Uni and don't forget they sometimes have an extra 10¢ offer if you have a flybuy card. Seeing they usually charge 20¢ to 30¢ more than other operators in the same area they are still making a very good profit.
As for spending $20 in their store -that just paid for the extra discount with the inflated prices they charge.
