sorry kel I am no help - I have enough trouble getting the hairdryer to work!!

Hello,

The click will be a relay, so the switch part is good and working. Check both the power and the return ( earth ) It could still be a relay with contact issues. How big is the motor ? What power does it draw when working ? ( meant to in Amps ) If it is a cheap small one, I have one somewhere that I can use to help you fault find. Do you have a Multi Meter ? Is it under warranty ?

Kel, does it use power to winch the boat onto the trailer and also to release the boat into the water. It could be set in the wrong direction.

Chris , I know nothing about amps , but I bought it new as a 12 v boat winch , so I believe it should be the right every thing ,it was sold by their add as a boat winch, or a winch for pulling your 4 x 4 out of bogs or for saving other car from being stuck , single pull 2000 lbs or using a snatch block , [ supplied with the winch ] 3800 lbs so it should be working .
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve , it is the one with the clutch sort , release the clutch and it free spins the drum to let the wire rope out , tighten the clutch up and it pulls the wire rope back in and around the drum ,.

I will be trying it again today for a while , and will let you know how I go ..    ,, kel ,,

Hello,

I would get it out of the Bin. With Aus consumer Law, you may be entitled to a refund and return it at their expense. Was it from Ebay ? You paid for a working product, and didnt get one. Wrong description and their fault Many places will try and make you pay if they can. I got an AC adapter that cost $24 and was the wrong one. It was returned at their cost, and the correct one sent. They may not have made much on the sale, but they didnt get a bad feedback score. I had a pallet delivered from Melbourne for not much more. Have a look on some other Forums, there may be a bad batch. When you mention that things may start to happen. What is the weight ?

hi Chris , from memory ,I think about 9  or 10 kgs ,  plus I would have to pack it up again as I put the box in the bin too , as these things are very easy to use and really nothing should go wrong with them ,and I did not expect anything to go wrong , I had one on my Hilux years ago and had no trouble at all , and this one is the same sort only a new version to the old one .. I believe this one had a faulty motor from the start and was just no good ..
so now it is off to the grave , good riddance I say .
anyway Chris I thank you for your answer .   ,, kel ,,

Hello,

I hate people that sell crap. Even if it Costs me, I will make them pay. I always give them a chance to put things right. If they don't, I go after them. Send it to me, I will pay the freight. ( dont tell my GF ) If we have some solid proof of a fault, their name will be rubbish.

Kel,
In my experience faults in this type of equipment from new are often something really simple -would be worth looking at the electrical connections for anything obvious such as a loose terminal or lug.
These are very similar, in a lot of ways, to car starter motors. A quick check by an auto electrician probably would be less than $47.90 and then send the bill to the supplier with a (politely worded) demand to pay.
Alternatively, if you know someone with a similar one they might take it off your hands for a bottle of rum (yo ho ho) for spare parts. At least that could get you something back from the disaster.

Chris's offer sound good too. I suspect his chances of success would be low though.

What make and model is it? I would be interested to check out what it looks like in case I could offer some specific suggestions.

My son has just bought a winch to put on my car trailer -he uses it much more than me. If yours is similar then I can have a look at his to see if there is anything particular I could suggest as a possible trouble spot.

thanks guys for your answers , but it is gone now and I have ordered another one , different sort , just like the ones they put on to 4 x 4 s
and the same as I had on my Hilux  in 2002 ,wont look as good on a boat trailer ,but at least it will work . I don't blame the seller I bought it off I blame quality control from the place where it was made . I have written to him and explained that it never worked at all not even once , and was only 5 days in my hands , and I never got to use it , so now I am waiting for a reply from him .. thanks for your help .

Quality control is a joke nowadays. You, the customer, are the quality control officer. I think the QC labels are probably pre-ticked and that saves them even having to stick them on!

Hello,

Who has heard the Urban Myth about a 4WD with a winch ? The story goes that someone put the cable over the roof onto the tow bar and then put a paper clip in the switch socket. Another version is the cable is run to a Car a couple of Cars ahead and the same thing. I would like to see a Pic, but have never found one when I looked.

sorry Chris , I have never heard of that , what do you think would happen ,?? would it be strong enough to cut the hood in half or not ?I don't think so but it would squash it for sure ..   ,, kel ,,

Hello,

It would do some serious damage. It would crush the roof and more. Think of the power, 2.5 tons stuck in mud. ( why you have a winch ) To move that a lot of force is needed. Apply that energy to the roof.
