It seems we have our first attempt at a spam registration.

Good, we do not need spammers here!

I am astonished that the spammers have found us so quickly. We're still so new we must still be all but invisible to the Internet at large.

I tried googling us, but no results.

Don't know how a spammer found us so fast. :scratch_one-s_head:

There were a number more last night, all gmail addresses, all nonsense user names.  The IP addresses were in China and Poland.  We've got a number of options to curtail this if it becomes a problem:

[list=1]
  • Prevent registration of users with free email services like gmail and hotmail
  • Add a simple non standard question to the registration process (like what's 4+2) to stop automated scripts and bots signing up
  • Email all signups manually and only confirm registration when we get an answer from a real person.
  • Do nothing and keep monitoring signups and just deleting the strange ones

I saw the 3 earlier this AM.

I actually recognized one of them, Murazor from Poland,  He's a member of CCF, so I don't think he would be a spammer.
Too late now I guess, or can he be resurrected?

I guessed the 2 from China would be spams.

Do you run their IP's through a spam check and if you do, which one do you use?

Nope, no resurrections.  Could you PM him Nancy and get him back?  There's a number of spam checking tools built into this board and I've just been using those.

OK, shall do.  If I recognize any in future, I'll approve them after I check them out of course.

No can do, he has his email turned off on CCF.

Maybe Sapyx could contact him? :icon_idea: But only if it won't get him in trouble with Bobby.

Out of these options, I would definitely use #2, and possibly #3, but it might become tedious if there are too many of them to deal with.  I s'pose we could give it a try and see how it works out.  I'm pretty sure that Barry emails new applicants of the KOTCT Forum, but not sure how long he gives them to respond, I guess 48 hrs should be enough.

Since he's already applied for membership here, I don't see a problem; I'll PM the e-mail address to Nancy.

But please be careful using the CCF PM/e-mail system for ACF purposes. Bobby has ways of finding out if people are doing that, and it would only take one complaint for this forum to find itself blacklisted like the KoCT forum is.

Don't worry, I still have the email address, I will send him an apology/invitation. edit*done

OK, I've set up the forum to ask a simple question when registering a new account.  This should stymie any bots or automated scripts from signing up spam accounts.  Of course if someone wants to register a spam account manually they'll still be able to do so.

I control membership on another forum and always check this site for spammers:

Am I able to see who applies and would be happy to check for you.

On another note may not be online much over next few days.  My mother had a bad stroke yesterday and is in Hervey Bay Hospital so I have had to come up here to be with her and mu sister.

Hope I can check in at least once daily.
Cheers
