So I recently got a collection that had been stored in some PVC sleeves long enough for the PVC to start leeching and it has lightly covered the crow of a gxf 1925 penny. Usually I would just discard a copper coin into my verdigris tub but that obviously isn't an option on this coin. Last time I tried to clean a copper coin with acetone it came out looking crap. How do I do it?

This is what I do, and is just my opinion. Doesn't look too bad actually, I've resurected many coppers in about that state by soaking in olive oil for 3 or 4 days, longer the better. The virdigris and other contaminants will be softened considerably at this point. Then with the coin on a pad of tissues and still coated with a generous amount of olive oil, very gently work at the trouble spots with a sharpened bamboo skewer/tooth pick. Do all this using a magnifying glass. When happy, rinse in olive oil, pad off excess, rinse in a light detergent mix, then rinse off with demineralised water. Then either lightly dab dry with paper towel, or dry with a hair dryer.
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

A soak in olive oil or WD40 will help.
WD40 will also fix any small verdigris spots as well.

Can one use the WD40 before/without using the Olive Oil?

,
Yep, or RP7 or if you can find it Balestol (A German product used in the firearms trade) all petro-chem products similar outcome.

For me I Roll Petroleum Jelly over the infected coin between my fingers, wash off under the hot water tap then drown the coin
in a capsule with whatever I have at hand.
Leave it for a few hours wash off again under hot water,
pat dry with kitchen paper towels.

It's not perfect but can save a coin but not repair damage.

This before and after was done in 2010
(Not the greatest of photo's not a keeper coin either)
