Just wondering if anyone has any clues to the grades on these.Had
them lying around for a couple of years but thought maybe I should

Ok having a HUGE punt as I wouldn't have a clew but the only way to learn so AU52 for the first maybe a bit higher at 55 and MS62 and like what look like die cracks :good:

Here are a couple of mine , Both are graded AU55 by PCGS.
You can use these as a point of reference to grade your coins :ok:

Trout, Interesting that they are both AU55 given that the 1885 appears to have fewer surface knocks. Relief on both is very nice.

Stevo1962, the 1867 has a few more marks than the 1871. IMHO, the 1871 is likely to be an AU55, while the 1867 is likely to be graded a little lower.

The Shield Sovereign's reverse is protected by the slightly concave design of the coin :good:

Thanks for the link Interest. Ah the Auction Queens. They have an auction at Johns River every now and again. When I know one is on I usually check their list to see if there's any coins. (often none). It looks like only a couple of items in this bunch of things. Not cashed up (what's new), so sovereigns are are bit out of my scope. One day ......

From the Sydney Morning Herald in 1946;
" Kingly sum
While looking for white ants and borers under an old hut at the Quarantine Station, North Head, Mr W. Patison put his foot in a rabbit warren and stumbled upon 60 gold sovereigns. Yesterday at the Coroner's Court the sovereigns were declared 'treasure trove and the property of our Lord the King'. This is the first case of Treasure trove in Sydney for many years. The earliest coin was dated 1864 and the latest 1894. They are valued at £162."
