Bloody ridicules I recon, What is happening here are dealers positioning prices to inflate the market ?

With regards to the 3d it's all about available coins. There's 6 on the population. Mark and I both have one, Emu has one in his 3d set -that's half of them accounted for. The threepence is a popular series to collect.

Fingers will be burnt I think.
There is no shortage of choice UNC QE2 coins.
More will come out of the woodwork.

I would imagine that that sort of price will bring many of these out of the woodwork :ok:

Possibly but I bet the next one doesn't get even half that price.  The market at the top end is very thin and once all the registry set players have a coin there's little support left for such strong prices.  PPH and I have had our coins for several years and were bought when prices were much, much, much, much lower :)  The coins came out of the same mint roll.

No. These were auction prices. What you are seeing is a case of very keen collectors for who will pay huge money for top population coins.

As 2 of the holders of such fine pieces you all3 of you must be very happy with the achieved price of the 56 threepence.

Hi Guys,

I am a newbie here ( collecting for a while, but first time on a forum) ... I agree sometimes people pay ridiculous amount of money for "not so rare"  coins just because they are the top of the pop. If it was an early low mintage coins, I can understand.. But later coins you never know when the collectors pulling out their collections and start grading them with PCGS... I have been burnt ... Bought an equal finest Shill a while back (1952 MS 65) checked the pop chart, there is a MS 66 available... So all that money I paid, gone to waste...   Most of the time the word " equal finest or single finest" gets good money... But the risk is you will loose that position in a heartbeat when someone else gets their coins graded with top grades.. My 2c worth...

Love to hear what you all have to say..

PS - glad finally I got an opportunity to post here :yahoo:

You are most welcome.  I like your observations about buying late date top pop coins.  It's not an inherently bad thing to do but you should expect that your "top pop" probably won't be forever.
