Curved base lettering (dot below scroll)- I have noticed a few with flat bases on the Nos. 1's whilst the remainder have curved bases. Is this considered as a variety.? Thanks in advance.! :dontknow:

Base of figure 1's flat.

Base of figure 1's curved. Also tail of first 9 longer.?

Lever describes a 1919 dot below penny - Melbourne - 'fish tail ones' variety (common)
and the picture of the date in his book looks just like your ones

I reckon you see enough varieties to warrant getting yourself one of these

Lever pays attention only to the die varieties
Rennicks pays more attention to the die errors

sounds like they need to get together and make one good book that covers them all, just a thought..I like it when you's talk about these things as it shows me what to look for when I do come across some old pre-decimal..thank you :hi:

no not really AJ
Fred's book is specifically about the die varieties - as they were made by the mint
the other error books pay more attention to the bits and pieces of say, die failures - die cracks, blobs, off centre etc

so the different books, and so few of them,  are really quite Ok for the needs of varieties or errors collectors

but i will comment, that the varieties book by Connelly - it doesn't seem to have developed a great deal as the years go by, has a little more recently

i'd suggest that a new errors book would be well received and some collectors seem to get them started but don't get to finish! as we all do !!

Levers ordered yesterday and posted yesterday.!! Thanks Robbie.!!

cool
your thread has re-inspired my interest in Levers book and I have been reading through it since
he does have some of the errors that I guess he classifies more in a die variety way rather than as a general error
hard to describe but if you have the two books side by side - you can see the difference!

A couple more I discovered this week/ 1919 Penny/ Die Clash/Spur and Doubling of lettering. (TRAL).

those ones are cool
you can just see KGV's nose outline too - just across from the base of the E in ONE
I think the spur is actually the imprint from KGV's cloak

The spur is from the region under the kings chin. On the obverse die it is surrounded on 3 sides by incused regions (the chin and chest) so the full force of the clashing is concentrated against the reverse die in the region of NN.
Further clashes can make the spur bolder, or if the dies have rotated you can get double and triple spurs. The 1920 double dot is a good example for showing the progression of spurs.
Occasionally the clashes outline most of the king.
On the QE11 pennies the can clashes be seen as a "fin" under the roos tail, sometimes a double fin. Again it is the region under the queens chin that makes the fin.

robbiegal

so am I right or wrong in thinking that the region below the king's chin is the collar etc. of his cloak?
King GV obverse here (halfpenny pic mind you)

This 1919 Penny seems well struck but for a very poor top scroll.? I have found a few today very similar.!!
The obverse shows a cold shut in the field and lettering.!
