I am at a kids party with 'laser tag'.
In the play area there are drums as props.
The drums were used to transport blanks to the mint!
I took a few photos, which I will try to put up later.

Sounds great!

Give them a good shake in case there are any left :laugh2:

I remember when the $2 coin first came out (and there were $2 coin poker machines) that a batch of blanks was stolen from Canberra and the crims moved their way from Queanbeyan, through Goulburn etc milking the machines with the blanks. Pretty sure from memory that they were caught pretty quickly.

I wonder what they do with those. I'd like one for my garden or shed or make into something cool. Maybe AJ could fashion a birdbath or a fishpond out of one!!!! Can't wait to see pics.

Make a spit out of one. Two spits actually, since you cut it lengthways.

The only trouble then is the heat will make all the paint come off and it could be any old 44 gallon drum. I'd like to keep it with it's unique authenticity.

Here are some pictures of 3 of the drums.
Those blanks are pretty heavy!
No wonder there is "Titan" to move the drums.

Agreed. Back in 2012 I worked in a drum recycling plant, thousands of drums went through daily and nowhere near that weight were any of the different drums that went through. Drums are usually designed to hold near a half ton of oil or other liquid so another quarter ton shouldn't be that much of a strain.
Guess they don't want the risk 125,000 coin blanks spilling out in an accident. A pain for them to pick up and a nice souvenir for any coin collector.

Cheers Ozcoins. Now I thought all the drums were colour coded for type but this red drum has double weight blanks (half the quantity). Photos from inside the Mint.

Then once the coins are struck and they go to storage they get an inventory sticker.

Just a tad more than 32kg. :mocking:  Maybe 732kg.

You're on the money there PPH (same colour different denom).

Great photos Ozcoins, thanks for sharing.

Used the weights / contents to come up with these for Oz's drums

Green  $2
Yellow  50c
Red  10c

PPH's Red Drum must have been 20c

purplepennyhunter

I can't make out what this one is.

And the stripes come in various colours too!

Nope, I can't either PPH. I can't blow the labels up big / clear enough.

I think we know who was behind the different colours .....

Slightly OT
When do the blanks become legal tender?
Is it when the mint signs for delivery, when they are struck or when they are released by the mint?
If a blank goes through the mint but accidentally bypasses the press is it legal tender?
Somebody posted (this forum or CCF) about some idiots who ended up with a whole bunch (a drum?) of $2 blanks and left a trail from Queenbeyan to Golburn in coin machines, so were they charged with possession of stolen goods (metal blanks) and defrauding the vending machines by using non coins or were they charged with stealing money?

Poorly expressed... what he meant to say is the empty drum weighs 33Kg. Which is more than your average run-of-the-mill drum.
