Were chrome dies used on 1963 florins?
The reason I am asking is I have this 1963 florin with a proof like finish .
The obverse has taken a beating but the fields have that polished die look about them.
Here are the best I can do with my scanner and camera :ok:

They were first used on an experimental basis in 1954 in Melbourne. So yes, very likely.

Also, just turned this up:

http://www.cruzis-coins.com/predecproofs/19632.html

"Examine the rim carefully as some Melbourne mint silver was struck with chrome plated dies so that they have reflective fields and can be confused with proofs, the circulation strikes are slightly rounded and often the extrusion is not all the way around."

It is a shame the mint didn't make more use of these chrome dies as they do produce a superb coin :good:
Any other years they used these dies for me to look out for ?
They would make an interesting set on their own :good:

HeHe
Seriously tho are there any other years to look out for post 1953 ?
These dies produce a specimen quality coin and are very attractive and   would make a seriously nice collection of coins  in that genre .
A set of business strike, chrome dies and proofs would be an ultimate ( and at the moment affordable) collection of pre decimal Lizzie silver coins.:wavemulticolor:

it is very nice Trout
but the softness on the RE would make me think that it wasn't a proof coin
oh, and the die cracks as well :)

I knew it wasn't a proof coin because it looks nothing like one, It is simply a higher quality   circulation manufactured coin and deserves it's own place in a pre decimal set:heart:

well, it looks very proof like to me

and the chrome dies are often attributed to for the 'proof like' strikes on business strike coins
