QuoteObviously it was mint state. The 1922 is often undergraded due to their poor reverse strikes.
It would be nice to spot something like this without anyone else spotting it :yahoo:
I know it happens on eBay so it must happen at live raw coin auctions occasionally :)

I might have to lower my expectations then.  Many thanks.

Would be interesting to know how this one would grade
considering the case for weak reverse strike

Probably only worth sending if it grades to AU but this coin has me stumped as it has 8 clear pearls but but looks like too much wear on the reverse to match the condition of the obverse.Or is it weak reverse strike?

To me the way the way the high points are flattened and not "weakly formed" on the reverse suggest wear to me .
This could have spent quite some time in a "Push in" album and that would explain the reason the obverse is not affected :ok:

My grading skills are obviously shot on this coin but the high points (Roo shoulder and emu feathers) on the reverse of this one seem as good as the one I saw on Saturday.  Can't recall the flat spot on the top of the star and the weakness in the lettering.  The fields are better.

Dish shaped dies.  The obverse die was convex resulting in a concave obverse and thus it's protected and a lot less worn.  Reverse die was concave resulting in a convex reverse and hence it's a lot more worn. I believe this was a deliberate design by the mint to extend die life.

I'd grade that coin UNC/EF.  The reverse is too far gone for AU IMHO.

So in that case it may be worth sending to PCGS but how would they grade it?

Now that I am not being pestered by a child I''d revise my obverse grade down to AU.  The fields don't look quite as nice as they did at first glance.

I think they'd grade it AU53 or AU55.

I can't say.  Don't know how much you paid for it.  Can't tell from the pics if it's cleaned.  Don't know what your long term goals for your collection are.

Paid $175 and slabbing it should improve the value for when I
eventually sell it
