Slabs .... I get the idea but its not my collecting ideal
Buy what gives you enjoyment

For 2014 I'm going to collect 1920 pennies:blush: (Same as every year).
Have also started to buy slabbed coins and high grade raw coins (I think I am competing with Trout as a convert, probably also bidding on the same Canberra florins:-/).
Finally have a home office dedicated just to my collection:yahoo: and can sort things out.
An expensive habit we collectors have:kez_15:

Are you collecting all 1920 pennies or just certain varieties?
It\'s not about who you know it\'s about what you know

As soon as I work out what CBL and FBL mean, and where all the die markers are, I might start too ;)

First on list to look for. Dot Above Bottom Scroll London Obverse.

Nevol

CBL = Curved Base Letter
FBL = Flat Based Letters

and that's where my knowledge of 1920 Pennies ends.

All varieties (at least of the Australian ones). So far I have:

1920 Dot Below English (a few hundred)
!920 Dot Below CBL (a few thousand+), Melbourne cloned dies (reverse) and mostly Melbourne cloned dies (obverse)
1920 Dot Below FBL (a thousand+), a mix of Calcutta and Melbourne struck dies
1920 Dot Above Sydney with Calcutta struck dies (a thousand+)
1920 Dot Above Perth with Melbourne struck dies (nearly one hundred)
1920 No Dot (probably Melb) (a few hundred)
1920 No Dot Perth with Melbourne struck dies(nearly one hundred)
1920 Double Dots (over a hundred)
and the rare stuff
1920 CBL with 1921 obverse (a few dozen)
1920 Dot Above Top (a few dozen)
1920 Dot Above English (a few).
I need to get 20,000+ before I'll feel confident that I have all possible combinations and die pairs. It is interesting (in a nerdy way) to follow a few hundred coins from a die pair and record the dozens of steps in a deteriorating die. Even more exciting to follow a die as it moves from one die pair to another; have a 1920 obverse (Melbourne struck) that was one of 4 obverse dies paired with a 1921 reverse and the other 3 dies included 1921 Indian obverse (off London supplied hub) and 1922 English obverse.
It gets really complicated to identify the various hubs, derivative masters, cloned dies etc but that is what keeps collecting interesting once you have completed the novices date set.

I also collect the 1921, 1922, 1924 and 1927 pennies with the 1920 Indian obverse.
And pre decimal in general.

Mate, I have a couple of hundred Canberra Florins and I thought I was compulsive.
I think that you have taken that to a whole new level, Each to their own Mate :good:

I am still very undecided as to what to do this year, do I keep my Decimal's completely up to date, or stop because my Dansco supreme 5, 10 & 50 cent albums are full?

This year being the 100th Anniversary of WW1 & next year 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli, I figure there will be a few commemorative coins released.
Should I stay or should I leave?
I just want Lizzie to fall off the perch, that's where I could end the decimal collection, her mum was 101 when she died Lizzie's only 87, she could go for another 10 to 15 years, sheesh.
How many more pages will fit into the Dansco's?

Maybe leave albums as is & just by what I like, but then if Lizzie does fall off the perch in a couple of years I'll have to rush out & buy all the coins from now till then.

I just don't know what to do????

Procrastinate ..... NOW! :laugh2:

I guess when the Duke of Edinburgh passes they'll probably release a die fill.

...... sorry .......

I say procrastinate too. Pick up the issues over the next 2 years for less than issue price.

That is the problem with Dansco type albums, They make you collect what they decide is a collection and not what YOU decide is a collection :ok:
The 2x2 albums are far superior as far as archiving coins goes ,you can add whatever you desire in them and as many coins as you like as well without running out of space :good:

As far as sitting back and playing "Catch Up" on coin issues I think that is the "Hard Way" of doing it, For Me picking the coins up as they are issued is easier and nearly always cheaper in the long run.

This year I intend to downsize my "Hoard" and maintain and increase my collections, My Proclamation , sovereigns and the New Zealand pre decimals sets need a fair bit of work on them and I am always sidetracked by coins that take my interest out of the blue.

So as for a strategy for this years collecting I simply don't have one

That's an interesting comment.  Clearly you must purchase a very select few RAM issues if you manage to get them cheaper at issue than on the secondary market a few years later.
