:agreed:

Besides which, I've never understood the fixation with which press produced a given coin. Its meaningless. The only way it would make any difference at all is if the dies were different, either by design, say large/small obverses for example, or damage, say cracks and cuds. And in both these cases the coin faces would tell the story without needing to resort to an unkeyed collar to try and tell them apart.

But regardless, I have no doubt this will continue to be debated for many years to come. *sigh*

I like to know which die or press a coin might be made from
that sort of makes it all more interesting
easier with older coins, not quite so with the newer decimals

I don't get it?

I was passing by the mint this arvo and at 3:15 pm visited and both mobile presses were shut down.Press 1 fully out of action,Press 2 got back online about 3:25pm . Quality this year is excellent the blanks have no carbon spots.

you in the ACT runway?
and what your excuse for the first 100 - or were you there?
we had a very good excuse - we were up the road at the Hyatt - getting our money's worth of R & R !!!!

Yes GS - I reckon they should have a ballot
though, I do also agree with the 'fun' of the competitive spirit

but it can get nasty when the outcome isn't what the competitive spirit wanted!! for sure

I have to admit I  thought last years was sus - that the one family got both coins - even through a raffle - just me being jealous I guess (everyone wants to be a winner!!) - but great publicity for the Mint for the 'feel good' story!!

Quote from: 'Goldseeker' pid='38759' dateline='1388664470'Runway-I'd hate to be a nuisance but both the Visitor gallery presses are converted RAM Production Presses when they changed the minting machines a few years ago.   These same presses were located in the old visitor gallery when I minted the Gallipoli coin(s) many years ago.

Since then, the feeding plate of both presses have been converted to a single coin feed plate so the coin you personally mint, is the coin one receives.

If you want to call these visitor gallery presses PORTABLEs then an army would be need to move them.

If I am not mistaken, there is a sign alongside the present visitor gallery presses acknowledging that they were both former production presses off the Production Floor.

In response to the "C" Mint Mark coins being available in late January then you are quite correct as those minted coins go into the four coin sets etc.   This can be verified by the reeding location on the side of the coins.   In most cases, visitor gallery minted coins have a different reeding start than the production presses.

The present "portable presses" only emboss the "C", "M", "B", "H", "A:" etc in an incuse (counterstamp) on various show coins about the place which can cost anywhere between $3 -$13 per coin..

Yes I realise that Goldy no argument from me :)

Quote from: 'markn' pid='38788' dateline='1388701819'I should add to this (because what I wrote may seem a bit abrupt) that this reeding issue was flogged to death on the old ACBO forum.  Goldy was trying to tell everyone then that you could identify the coins from the different gallery presses by reeding position.  So PPH and I made a point of going back to the RAM several times in the same year and minting gallery press coins each time.  And the reeding position was different every single time.

That same year we were lucky enough to be at the RAM while they were pulling the dies out of the gallery press and it was obvious that the collar die (which really just looks like a steel donut) was not keyed and could be installed into the press at any angle relative to the obverse/reverse dies.  Which basically means that the reeding position (from the gallery press coins at least) is 100% random.  Now, perhaps the production press coins are different but given that the gallery presses are production presses anyway then I very much doubt that.

So what's the upshot of this?  Reeding position is meaningless.  It can change whenever the collar die is removed from a press and unless you own the entire mintage of a particular type of dollar then you cannot say that the reeding position is the same for all coins of that type.

That's real interesting thanks markn
