Quote from: 'trout' pid='98501' dateline='1474482064'I have two World Modern submissions that have yet to be graded.
One is with PCGS for grading and they received the submission on 22/8/16, The other I sent to NGC last week and it has yet to arrive at the Sarasota office.
Any guesses as to which submission will be graded first :)
probably NGC , but that could mean that they either have more graders working or less coins to grade than PCGS

You never Know, One of the submissions at PCGS is already 5 working days overdue according to the turnaround times and the NGC submission has yet to be received

My submission finally arrived at NGC on Friday, So it should be done in 12 working days or less if they are true to their recent form.
This is for a 42 coin submission that new coin numbers will have to be created for as none of these coins have been graded by NGC before :ok:

I just noticed that Downies are now selling PCGS and NGC graded coins.
Is this something new as I can't recall seeing these on their site before ??

What's the plastics factory please, would someone help me with the grading scale ie, what the grading letters stand for would help me know more about my shilling collection and what grades I should buy to complete the set. Thanks

Have a read... these are the Australian grading standards.

Plastic factory is PCGS or NGC, third party grading companies.

the irony is that the PCGS & NGC holders are acrylic
not plastic - every body here freaks out about putting coins in plastic

JeffH

But 'acrylic' is plastic!

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), also known as acrylic or acrylic glass as well as by the trade names Plexiglas, Acrylite, Lucite, and Perspex among several others (see below), is a transparent thermoplastic often used in sheet form as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to glass. The same material can be utilised as a casting resin, in inks and coatings, and has many other uses.
Special purpose plastics
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) (acrylic) – Contact lenses (of the original "hard" variety), glazing (best known in this form by its various trade names around the world; e.g., Perspex, Oroglas, Plexiglas), aglets, fluorescent light diffusers, rear light covers for vehicles. It forms the basis of artistic and commercial acrylic paints when suspended in water with the use of other agents.

I have paid two invoices for grading fees this week to both PCGs and NGC, So the exchange rates would have been pretty much the same.
There is a small difference in the grading fees from both companies But there is a huge difference in the Shipping fees.
The shipping fee from PCGS for 8 coins was $103.98 AUD and the shipping from NGC for 42 coins was $55.10AUD.

I think the problem with PCGS is because they will use the same sized box to send 1 coin in that they would send 80 coins in and NGC will package up to suit the number of coins in the order.
On the occasions that I have sent a single coin to PCGS they have always sent it back in a huge cardboard box that contains a plastic blue box that houses a single coin, Quite ridicules when you think about it really :dash1:
If you were to buy 8 graded coins from the US I would think that most people would flatly refuse to pay over a hundred bucks for postage for them :ok:
My 8 "Free" submissions actually cost me over ten bucks a coin to get done, No such thing as a Free lunch at PCGS :(

Many of my ungraded coins are stored in a 100% plastic environment and are pretty much completely safe from environmental damage.
It ALL depends on which type of plastic you choose that decides the fate of your coins.
If you choose to use saflips for your coins and put them in archival quality plastic pages that are held in a non PVC album covers and slips then they are quite safe, If just one of those items contain PVC then it is a quite different story and your coin WILL be at risk :ok:
I personally use both saflips and 2x2 holders I my albums, The saflips are a slightly better option but I just like the paper/mylar flips more.
The Important thing is that the flips, pages and covers must NOT contain any PVC whatsoever.
There are many threads on the forum that cover this :)

I have just looked at the images from my latest submission of 25mm Silver coins to PCGS.
I ALWAYS handle my Proofs and other high grade coins with gloves when I take them out of the Mint packaging to send them off to be graded.

6 of the twelve coins in this submission have fingerprints on them that were NOT there when I sent them away and to say that I am I little disappointed would be the understatement of the year, I am bloody FURIOUS !!!!!!!!!
These coins have spent just under 6 weeks in PCGS's care and some Maggot has put his/her bloody pinkies on my coins at some stage.

Here is an example.

This is a coin prior to being sent to PCGS

Here it is again after being graded

I have sent hundreds of coins away to be graded and I have never had a problem with fingerprints on ANY of my coins from prior submissions over the last 3 years.
I have NOT changed my method of handling the coins and all of a sudden there are fingerprints on half of the coins in a submission.
There is absolutely NO way I can prove that this happened at PCGS and they will deny it anyway.

Any advice on how to deal with PCGS about this, I am too angry at the moment so I will delay emailing them about this for now.
