stamped into them.  Does anyone know how these come about?

I read something about it a while back and think maybe Robbie knows but not sure about that.

On the older coins , I mean 1700's and back often have  "Chop Marks' in them. they did this to ascertain if they were real silver and not fakes.
The modern coins are simply PMD .

yep PP i think irene was asking about the decimal coins ones ,
My theory on those numbered coins , i reckon the  old PMG /telstra   might have  issued them to their phone box mechanics  , to test the coin  mechanism  on the public phones ,and to possibly  stop them pilfering  or maybe even  vending/poker machine mechanics , to see if the  machines spit out the correct coinage in a certain order.:-/

I remember years ago when i was a pinball wizard hehe  the pinball mechanic would have   coins with painted crosses on them , so he could retrieve the coins out of the coin hopper after his repairs .

I have a number of these all on dollars. I don't expect that they're worth more than a dollar but have kept them for novelty and in case I figure out one day how they really came about. The Telecom idea is a good one, what cost a dollar back then though!

I reckon it's the kids at school doing metalwork as a subject. Alphabetical and numerical punch sets and some reasonably soft metal to test it on.

Did you buy a vowel Czark or is it part of the secret code authorising the launch of US nuclear missiles?

That's a very good theory. My uncle was OIC of the section that maintained stamp dispensers. They used rolls of black test stamps with white lettering on them. Can't recall exactly what they said, but I have some stashed someplace. I tried using them on First Day Covers, but the sneaky sods postmarked around them so as to cancel only the real stamps. :(

I do have vague memories of seeing one or two coins with numbers punched on them around then, but never thought to ask if they were part of the test thing. Can't ask now, as he passed away a few years ago. :(

Just got home from a couple of days of coin stuff with Phil after picking up some treasures forum members stuffed my PO box with (Thanks guys, you all know who you are). Give me a chance to find the albums and I'll see what I can do.
