Yesterday I passed a caravan park with rows of identical cabins. Immediately the song "Little Boxes" came into my mind and has been on repeat play ever since.
Little Boxes by Pete Seeger
I just mention this in the hope of infecting someone else. My theory is that will then clear this earworm from my head.

Feel free to post your latest earworm to annoy someone else.

Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Curse you! Now you've gone and brought back horrible memories of my HSC English exam which was in the Western Annexe of the Exhibition Buildings (now demolished)!

Walked in, sat down.
They said write your name on the paper. Did that.
They said open the paper and time starts now.
Read through it first.
First question was "Little boxes, little boxes. Write 500 words"
Another question was "Sand. Grit Dirt. Write 500 words"
Finished reading the paper. Sat staring at the roof.
The 20-minute mark passed, when you are allowed to leave.
Got up, handed in the paper with only my name on it, and walked out.

As I recall, I didn't pass.
In fact, I failed HSC English three times, and didn't graduate from C.I.T. (now Monash Uni) as a result.

Devils Advocate indeed, Jeff... so in retaliation I'm going to tell you about AJ invading my dream just now. :P

pity
you seem to have excellent command of the English language now

I have such an over active imagination that in 20 minutes I could write a short novel on the thoughts & ideas that those words would trigger

but give me a formula or mathematical matter, physics chem,
and i'm staring out the window waiting to be released from my mental prison!!!!

Then too. But then again, exams are all about passing exams, not proving you have whatever skills, talents or abilities they purport to be measuring.

I know some absolute drongoes who always aced exams, while most of the smart people never did well at all. One of my exes had an IQ of 161 yet struggled to make it through 5th form. Much later on she became one of three people who could write microcode for a bit-slice supercomputer we were building (I tried, but never got past the basics, though I was a whiz at wirewrapping the boards for it). She was one of the most talented people I've ever met, though she had zero common sense.

yep
high IQ doesn't always equate to grounded ways

when I was younger the IQ numbers were considered important but now that I am older and wiser (and maybe having done a few psyche subjects has helped) I also see that they are embedded in culture and class
so not entirely reliable

anyways, it is such a pity that the school and exam system makes brilliant people into numpties
but most of the said numpties (having been one myself) go onto quite successful careers and lives

& i think that is because we have good old fashioned common sense to figure things out

That bloody Star Trekkin song has been rattling through my head all day.
I recon women are normally the most common sense people, It just comes naturally to them :ok:

The politicians have a lot to answer for I reckon. Just watch the hatchet job if Abbott wins today.

What they don't seem to get is the immense value of a smart society. Stupid people do stupid things. They harm themselves and others, they cost society immensely (and not just in monetary terms either), and they drag everything down to their level. It is critical that we get rid of stupid people. Not by shooting them of course, but by educating them, and by providing valuable things for those who just aren't capable of competing on an equal footing.

Yet short term political goals stuff things up repeatedly, and the result is we're getting stupider as much of the rest of the world gets smarter.

Of course by the time the poo hits the fan, which will be when we've dug up and sold off the whole country, the cretins responsible will be long gone. :(
