Hey all just having a little noodle while I wait for 5kg of pennies to arrive hehe but I came across this 2003 10 cent and I was wondering if this is PMD or what? It reminds me of a proof coin in a way..
behind the lyrebird?? I will take a photo tomorrow when I have sunshine if needed as the scan doesn't seem to show that shine that I can see..

trout

I am not sure what this is but I don't think it is a proof coin, Far too much detail in the Queens hair for that.
The proof coins loose a bit of the hair detail due to the "Frosting".
Still an interesting coin and I am sure my peers will give you a far better explanation for this coin than I can :ok:

I've got a pair of 2001 fed $1 like that sitting here. They pop up from time to time, usually $1 or 50¢ from what I've seen. Not proof in my opinion, but certainly not run of the mill business strikes either. Mint sets maybe?

This odd appearance mainly on on the 10c Rev is something I used to see a lot of.  Someone referred to it as 'soapy residue', but how does a coin get mixed up with soap while its being minted?

I did keep some of them out of curiosity, but haven't got a clue where they are now.

You mean the marbling effect a few of them have? Sort of like orange-peel? That's not what I understood the scans to be of, but I guess we'll see when real pics show up, eh? :)

No, definitely not that. The 10c Rev sort of looks as though it's been frosted, can't say I've ever seen it on the Obv though, but have occasionally seen small amounts on the 5c rev, but not in all the devices like on the 10c.

Im trying to take some photos with my camera phone that i always use but cant seem to get a drcent shot of the frosting effect. Hmmm any suggestions?  Im still waiting on my magnifier to arrive for those real close ups.

Orry about the spelling, im using the mobile and ive got stubby thumbs haha

Could it be that this may have been spray painted at some stage and the paint has worn off leaving a residue in the protected parts of the fields on this coin

That's it Fulvio, looks the same too me... And Trout, I wouldn't have a clue haha

Nevol

Yep, that's it fulvio, you've captured it very well.  I had a look for mine today but didn't find them. I may have turned them loose.

I do remember that the 'frosting' practically covered all the devices on the Rev on the 10c. Outside the devices and around the edges was usually clear of it.

Ah, cool then. So back to the original question...

I've no idea what causes it, but I think its a die issue, so a genuine error, and I'd be keeping them pending further investigation/explanation.
