Will make for some interesting debate.!!:shok:

I will start with a debatable idea.
Split planchet? One part ejected and this one lined up for another go. If so, there should be another coin with about complete reverse but little, or no obverse.
Just speculation and I will be interested to see what other ideas come forward.
But, I am uncertain how a stuck, part planchet didn't get another one drop onto it for next strike.

What puzzles me is definitely two strikes on the head but I can only see one strike of lettering; except a tiny bit on the rim.
Have you measured the thickness Mark? I would be prepared to bet (must ask Tom W for odds) that it is rather thin (and perhaps not constant across the coin).

Jeff
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

Haven't measured the thickness but it's definately thinner like a split planchet and feels it in hand. The obverse has only some of those striation lines you'd see on a split planchet. The reverse is terribly weakly struck just like you'd see on a struck planchet only half the thickness.

looks like this is that thin it has "Bounced" in the striking process.
Very very unusual coin :yahoo:

SPECTACULAR SHOTS

yeah - looks like a split planchet when under such high magnification, doesn't it?

Given the surge in decimal error pricing lately, particularly the 50c, value anyone?

I will have a go.  Just over $600 :-)

$1000-2000 ireckon. Those misstrikes have been going well over $2k and this is just as spectacular if not more so.

The only remotely plausible explanation is a 50c that was struck once, split when struck. When pushed out by the feeder finger half the coin left, the other half was only moved by about 25% of thw width of the coin and rotated slightly and was struck again. The reverse is the side that split. It is a pretty remarkable error.  I am only aware of a few Australian decimals struck on split planchets.  This coin is an order of magnitude stranger than that.
