While non-pvc storage systems seem to be the way to go for coins, does the same concept apply to paper and polymer banknotes?

For the life of me, I can't recall whether my albums are pvc or not, but after going back over some old threads regarding pvc damaging coins, I'm a little concerned about my banknotes. Unlike coins, they don't have a 2x2 layer between them and the sleeve.

Any thoughts on safest way to store banknotes?

Non PVC sleeves are a must. I would suggest vario sleeves. PM me. I stock these

+1 for Vario.

Avoid the Renniks "Acid Free". they are acid free
but Not PVC free.

I went to an Art shop and got some sheets of Acetate and cut them to size and put the
notes between 2 sheets in an album

I use Vario......would not put my notes in anything else.

Once you determine what the film is, brands are irrelevant, apart perhaps from manufacturing quality (cut accuracy, weld strength, etc). The rest is hype.

Plastic films start life at around $1-2/Kg. You could buy large rolls and use a sealer to make your own storage systems, or you could pay hundreds of times that for certain "name" brands. That's personal choice, but it doesn't change the fact that all the products made out of a given material are identical.

So choose the material you want to use, then find the cheapest form to buy it in that suits you. Forget brands. PP, PET, LDPE, just stay right away from PVC.

I use Vario. Fulvio has the letters right too. PP, PET, HDPE all good. PVC BAD

I have tried and stock brands other than lighthouse and found even tho cheaper they offer poor protection to the note due to being so flimsy. IMHO I would use lighthouse sleeves and vario being a4 size suit 99% of notes.

Can't recall the brand, but back in my stamp collecting days I had some black pages with a mylar overlay attached. This sheet would literally lock the stamps in place and pretty much exclude all air from getting to them. I would imagine they'd come in sizes to suit banknotes as well. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Hagner or kanga pages. Safe storage but hate them. Mylar offer deals off and not sealed down sides so notes fall out

Fulvio

Hagner, that's the ones.

Hmm.. never had any problems with stamps falling out, even when I overloaded them. But then stamps are small and light I guess.

Anyone heard of Importa out of the Netherlands? Most of my albums come from or are made by Importa. A number of pages have PET stamped on them, so I guess I'm safe there. However, there are others which haven't got anything on stamped on them, although the material does feel the same. Any ideas?

I imagine PVC is quite tough, in which case I do have a few albums, but they contain coins. How does PVC react with coins over time?

Unicorn

QuoteHow does PVC react with coins over time?

Initially the PVC displays a surprised reaction, similar to "COINS!  Oh Sh!t, you're not putting them near me".

After the initial shock, the PVC soon shapes itself into a snug pocket around the coin.

Soon after, the coin, in amazement of the change in attitude displayed by the Buddah Tempered PVC, becomes envious of the PVC and turns green.
