just saw that I wrote halpenny - not halfpenny!!

was in a bit of a hurry
plus, I can't spell!!

sounds like something from a sci fi movie
I am sure there is a sinister character somewhere in movie land called Hal

accumulator

Nice Robbie :good: a little edge pinch there too ?

robbiegal

Just to add:-
The Obverse 4 Plain Reverse halfpenny is the result of a Single Die pairing.
(May have been two, brain's not working)
It's the lowest mintage Halfpenny when you exclude the
1923 and 1916mule.
Less than 200,000 minted.
Very collectable.

Robbiegal, Hal was the computer's name in 2001 A Space Odyssey. It took control and was rather evil.

Interestingly HAL is one letter off IBM

..... open the bomb bay doors please Hal ......

thanks for the mintage details Fordie
I knew there was a special reason for having this coin but I was feeling too lazy to pull out my Lever book

and wow - Unicorn
jogged the memory there on that one & I do remember the IBM rumour

I am sure that the humble 1951 no dot halfpenny is far from evil!

Echidna has a lovely looking 1951 halfpenny there
I am sure it is a real dazzler in the hand as well
I find that the halfpennies from the 1950's always look rough regardless to the wear based grades

I would suspect that gorgus gold halfpenny is easily a MS64 - maybe 63 but huum, I don't think so

I thought it might get 64 RB and be equal highest.
Alas it only got 63BN.
Very harsh.

Are you serious ? Bugger me!
This one I submitted got MS63RB
Certainly doesn't look as nice as your one.

I just sent 6 more coins over, but I won't be holding my breath.
Seriously thinking about using NGC next time. I quite like their holders.

I have received some very harsh grades lately from PCGS.
I don't believe that they are consistant.
Possibly due to new graders...

For me the consistency was meant to be one of the 'pros' for using PCGS.
I've been lucky that the few coins I have sent have graded well, but there have been a number of people sharing the same thoughts as you on ebay and other online auctions.
It'd be nice to say people are buying the 'coin' and not the 'slab' when these coins go up for sale but this doesn't seem to be the case.

What are the spots on the obverse?  A break in colour or something else?  Remember if they see a problem with a coin they can penalise it a point or two rather than no-grading it.

There is the usual light spotting.
Which probably dropped the grade from 64 to 63.
The inconsistency seems to be BN vs RB.

PCGS hate spots and carbon streaks.  I am not surprised to see that coin in a MS63 slab.  I am a little surprise about the colour but I'd need to see another image or the coin.  The one you've posted looks a little over exposed.
