One of my newest and bestest coins bought from the Auckland coin show last weekend.

This is a 1645 Hammered crown of Charles I!

It was minted at Exeter (Devon) as a Royalist was privately minting coins for the crown, he was shut down a few months later. So this coin is huge and hack silver basically, scarce type as its dated and has a turret/castle mintmark. My first ever pre milled British crown, it is rough and worn (Still fine) but what a coin.

For you Aussies, its ex a Downies sale with an 80s style Downies card with it.

You guys are going to love this crown, it was the one that got away when I bought the 1645 crown. The buyer is a friend of mine and he needed the money so sold this coin to me (With a little mark up of course, born coin dealer).

This is a 1551 Silver Crown of England, Edward VI. This is a dream coin I have dreamed owning for years, it is a cassic coin, first ever silver crown and huge silver coin of England in the 16th century big coin craze after silver was found in a Czech mountain (Joachimsthal) and mountains of silver and gold coming out of the Americas through Spain and Portugal.

The coin weighs almost 31 grams and is 42mm in size. The fact the crown (5/-, 60 pence) denomination was usually a gold coin back then, speaks volumes of how much silver there is. It is also the first English coin (The UK did not exist until 1801 and Great Britain until 1707) that had a date on it in Arabic numerals. We got some Roman ones in 1548, but no dates at all except mintmarks before that. The coin has the Y mintmark indicating it was minted by Sir Thomas York.

The coin is turning 475 years old this year.

And this is a hammered coin, so must have been a chore to mint.

As soon as I looked at it I said, wow that is hand struck, huge detail for one like that. Of course I love it.
Cost you what? $1,000 kiwi?
I'd love to see you get that graded but I reckon it would probably get Details cleaned.

Just details cleaned, they usually give you a grade like VF details cleaned. I think it was cleaned a long time ago as some blue toning has come back and toning generally takes a few decades to form.

I am not so sure about it being VF though, probably a good Fine as Eddie's head is quite flat and some of the stunners out there, you can see all details.

$1,000 Kiwi though - not even close. I paid $3,900 for it. Catalogue price in Fine in the UK is £1250 and V Fine is £4,000. Actual values are much higher, you never see them outside auctions. The guy who sold it to me turned down an offer of £2,400 from the UK as he wanted the coin to stay in the country and also a local dealer for the same amount, as he knew I would love it.

Its annoying its cleaned though, nearly every old coin is cleaned here, I have never cleaned anything unless its grubby or common and I was "testing" mainly hot water and detergent washes.

It's lovely but I couldn't justify paying that much for one coin.
I did spend $2000 on a ghost $10 note and $2800.01 on a consecutive pair of Coombs and Wilson Star $10 notes that graded as MS64 if I recall correctly.
That was my biggest spend. Not at the same time.

I couldn't really either unless it was a super special coin.

I have always been interested in British and before that English coins and first got into history around age 8 and read about Kings and Queens of England and have been obsessed with the Tudors since then and when I seriously got into coins, read books about the history of English coins and noticed the importance of that fine silver series of Edward VI from 1551 -3 and the fact those coins were the first silver Crowns, Halfcrowns and Sixpences, so owning one is a piece of history.

I actually got a beat up shilling of the series back in 2021, but I had never seen the crowns until that one came along 2 months ago and a friend bought it before I did. Fortunately he is terrible with money and needed to sell it, so I became the natural choice and here we are.

If its something I am really into, and I have the money and know it could be a good investment like that coin, I would buy it. Its the most I have paid for a coin outside gold (Bought whole gold ounces for like $7,800 etc (Remember our dollar is worth 82 of your cents)) and usually my limit for any coin is around $500 - $1,000.

But already again a friend has just got me a 1828 Half Crown in VF and I am paying him $1,000 for it (Actually he is getting a gold sovereign and he is sending me $800 more of stuff I have chosen). Yes my coin collecting is probably getting out of hand, but its better than spending it on wine, women and song. Plus I am getting an income now at least too.

I am usually sensible, but opportunity seldom knocks twice, had I NOT bought that crown, its likely I would never have had another chance to.

Fair enough, it is a great coin and it brings you happiness. That is most important.
My last gold purchase was an ounce roo but in those days it was $1750 Australian for an ounce. Wish I had bought more.
I keep hoping for gold to go back down to $3000 an ounce. I think I'll be waiting a long time.
