If you are outback or in a "black spot" signal area you may be interested in this I have listed. Digital Free to Air (VAST) satellite receiver.

WTF???? Registration? Permits? Sounds as dodgy as charging for TV licences... :dodgy:

That's a Government sponsored service for you. Access to ABC and SBS satellite transmissions is unrestricted, Australia wide; except for the little matter of registering your details and having your smartcard activated! Bah! Humbug! I say.

Of course, if you know what you are doing, you can point the dish at a different satellite and get all the ABC and SBS transmissions, without a smartcard and just about any receiver (at about ¼ the price of the authorised receiver) will suffice. That only gives SD picture and, if you want HD (why bother?, I ask) then you might have to splurge up to ½ the price of the authorised receiver.

Maybe a few bureaucrats (and a couple of politicians too) should be hung, "pour encourager les autres".

Not to be contrary, but remove the words "Maybe" "few" and "couple" and I'll agree enthusiastically with you. :diablo:

What does this all mean? Australia is retuning
Analogue TV requires channels not be adjacent frequencies otherwise they will interfere with each other. Digital TV works happily with channels on adjacent frequencies and we now have digital TV country wide.

So, why bother? By "stacking" digital transmissions on adjacent frequencies a large number of other, contiguous frequencies are cleared and available for other uses. "What other uses?", I hear you ask. Check out this article to find out...Telcos testing new band .
If you prefer a simple, single word answer to the question, it is "MONEY". Mobile coverage is being extended into what was previously part of the TV spectrum.

Altech UEC DSD4121 VAST satellite Free to Air satellite box failures. What a mouthful of acronyms!

If you have satellite TV from the otback/black spot service and your DSD4121 (not DSD4121RV, which has a plug pack power supply) dies then;
•If it is still under warranty then claim warranty but, if you can repair yourself it will be cheaper than posting back to Lane Cove to be repaired. Read on...
•Common failure is one of two marginally rated components on the power supply circuit board. Symptom -box completely "dead"; no lights or display on front panel.
•Cost of replacement, higher rated, components is less than 20¢ and repair takes about 20 minutes.

But, you must know what you are doing. There are potentially quite high voltages lurking on a faulty board. Even several hours after power has been disconnected. OK, I've covered my arse -if you (or a friend) can handle a soldering iron then email me and I will send instructions.

Reconditioned power boards are available, on the net from several places. -cheapest price I could find is $55 + $11 postage.
If you would prefer just to get a replacement board then I will supply one for $35, posted -conditional on you posting your old, faulty board back to me.

Cheers,
Jeff

Have you bought one of these? Never Pay For Cable Or Subscriptions Again? This Device Allows You To Watch Your Favorite Shows Without Monthly Fees!
If so, commiserations. You could have spent that money on a decent bottle of wine and had much better value.

If you are considering purchasing one of these amazing devices a word of advice......DON'T.

Their adverts. are popping up on the Bureau of Meteorology weather forecast page (and, no doubt, plenty of other places).
