I have never sold on eBay but have made over 1,000 purchases.
I always work out my bid based on the postage. If I'm willing to bid $10 for an item then if postage is $8 then I'll either bid $2 or not waste my time.
If postage is free then I'll bid $10.
If the seller combines post then I'll bid higher and on more items.
When you have sellers having postage (not even registered) of $20, $50 and higher then I won't bother with that seller.
Bottom line is I have no objections to sellers covering their costs but I hate gouging.
Also postage cost is just that, the cost of the stamp/registration and the envelope/padding. It is cr@p when sellers try and charge for handling. If you go into a retail store you don't pay the price plus handling so why do online sellers think they can pull that stunt?

The price in stores already includes handling.  And rent. And power. And rates.  And insurance.  And sundry employer expenses.  And a profit margin.  Just because you don't see a price that breaks it all down for you don't kid yourself that you're not paying it.

I don't have a problem with eBay sellers including a "handling" cost, you just need to factor it into your final bid amount.

What is wrong with a handling fee?
Selling "face to face" and "cash in hand" is better all around. There are less hassles, less fees, less risks, no buying stamps and packaging, no labels to do, no queueing at post offices, no registering mail and telling the registration number, no mail going missing (or fraudulently claimed to be missing), no damaged in the mail problems, no item not as described problems.
If you want it posted, why not pay for the extra risks, hassles and work?

everyone has difference views
but a whole bunch of listings can take one or two days of full time work
internet charges, seller store fees (ours is $50 month), & sale price fees + paypal fees, purchase of the items + travel costs if you go shows/auctions, camera for photos, description, listing,
envelopes, packing, labels and travel to post etc

one dealer who I know pays wages for his ebay store as well as the fees
so he pays a full time salary each week to his employee

for the past few years, yes, I sell for fun of the hobby and to recover costs to fund my hobby
I would like to be a seller in my retirement and for the past 8 years I have been trying the business out to see if it cold 'bring home the bacon' so to speak
but if I give it away then I may as well give up on the whole game

for buyers, yep it is easy - press the button & pay by paypal for which the seller  incurs further charges from

sometimes, I can't understand some complaints and then people go on about the thousands of dollars that they will spend on one coin and then bag a seller for charging more then 60 cents for postage

chuck a coin is a PCGS slab and the price goes through the roof and no one seems to buck about that (- addit - not all , the rarer 'pcgs' grades really)

sometimes the views seem too incredulous for me to even understand

Most of the "Whinges" about eBay are Fake coins, Crappy images, Polished/overgraded coins and excessive postage charges.
That is a buyers perspective and is worth thinking about if you want to be successful selling on this medium :ok:

sellers have perspectives too
and sellers are buyers as well
just because someone sells, it doesn't make them second rate citizens

I really don't believe that postage is such an issue except for people trying to get stuff really cheap

many successful ebay sellers (and ANDA members) have consistent postage charges of $6 - $10 -$15 and they have thousands of feedback numbers
and repeat customers

even the RAM charges a far wack of postage - why? because aussie post charges too & it is a cost recovery for postal costs and wages paid to issue that item
people bag the mint but there are employees, rents paid and heating and cooling of a very large building, huge insurance premiums and Titan to pay off as well!

end of rant xx

I get where you're coming from RG. If you have a few hundred items to list the time to put them up
has to be taken into account. It takes me 3 minutes on average to list each item so if I had 200 items
it would take me 10 hours and if I had to pay somebody it wouldn't be worth it.Sometime I hesitate for
weeks if I have a lot of items to list as I don't look forward to the listing to sell part of the hobby
It\'s not about who you know it\'s about what you know

I am Sorry RG but I have to disagree with you Mate :ok:
If I feel that the postage costs are too high I will neither bid or buy on an item from a seller, Regardless if it is a $5 or a $500 coin.
My view is if I think they are being "Shonky" with the postage costs , How can I trust them to deliver the coin I am bidding/buying from them in the first place
Lets face the facts , 99.99% of eBay sellers have little or NO overheads (Unlike B&T Dealers) and postage "Scalping" is simply a scam IMHO.
As far as paying off Titan goes, The taxpayer has already done that

Bricks and mortar shops also have costs and some of them are equivalent to online (mail goes missing online and stock gets shoplifted in stores).
if I buy a coin for $10 in a shop I hand over $10. I don't get told there is a handling fee on top to pay for the stores staff.
Oftentimes the sellers specifically state in their listings  No Pickups. So it isn't necessarily what we want but what they want. It can also be an extra hassle for a buyer to wait a week or two for a package, worry about the mail box everyday and then get a card in the mail requiring a trip (sometimes 2) to the post office to pick up the package. All for an online dealer who is an easy stroll away in a nearby suburb.
The item not as described might be because unlike real shops (where you can see the product) you are relying on the sellers description and photos. Lots of coins are mis-described and photoshopped and fleabay does diddly squat to crack down on them.

Quotebut why doesn't PP have 2.5X2.5 in stock?
Sounds like some Sod cleaned her out of stock :laugh2:
Also I can put 8x 3d coins in a 2.5x2.5 saflips with the aid of a heat sealer thanks to NO small part in the way  one of our members sent coins to me :)

:dodgy: yes went to put an order in the other day only to be told they're all gone so I knew it was trout

points taken Neal
people usually shop online for convenience and the after sales can be inconvenient
I always prefer reg. post as I have had TOO many items go missing and the seller doesn't give a toss

anyways I always have reg post and have many repeat customers over many years
so I don't think that I have it 100% wrong

buyers get to trust you and come back

I NEVER allow pick-up
1. cause I am a woman
2. I don't want all and sundry knowing where I live
3. having attempted it, off site pick up is far more hassle to organise than popping the item in the post and half the time it is for a item for a couple of dollars anyways
4. now, I never collect as I have had times with the seller trying to get me into their home to showcase more items for sale and the pick-up becomes an hour visit - which can be ok but a bit disconcerting with strangers
