Australian Banknotes / RE: Pre-decimal Banknotes
June 09, 2019, 11:36:50 AM
Quote from: 'Triggersmob' pid='119497' dateline='1559471246'My friend also gave me some pre-decimal
notes to value for him. This is what he has.

One Pound QEII, serial HC 01 261231 uncirculated
One Pound QEII, serial HJ 81 894891 well circulated, some fold and small tears, no holes.
Ten Pound QEII, serial WA 57 755498 lightly circulated, but some folds and small tears, no holes.

Any value in these?
The ten pond note was printed in 1950, It is a General prefix and Maccas 21st edition puts the value at $140 F
The one pond note HC01261231 was printed in 1953 and Maccas put it at $375 UNC
the other pound note HJ81894891 was printed in 1961 or later and Maccas put this at $12 VG

Quote from: 'Triggersmob' pid='119503' dateline='1559547974'Not surprising really.
Things have come a long way in the last 50 years.

In 50years time there will still be plenty of GT falcons around but you wont see any crappy rice burner Honda Civics.. No sweater sound than a 351ci small block at full cry...Civics sound like dads victa lawnmower...

My 79 series Landcruiser diesel V8 with its 5in stainless exhaust sounds pretty sweet at full roar as well

There were 55,006 1977 proof sets minted which all contained a proof 1977 2c coin.
The 1977 2c coin being discussed here is Not a proof and as far as I am aware there were No Specimen strike ( similar to the old pre decimal proofs)  1977 2c coins minted either.

Australian Errors and Varieties / RE: 2000 Mule

Quote from: 'serenitystan' pid='119248' dateline='1556425790'Nice pickup. :sun_bespectacled: Just my humble opinion that the 2000 mule is ridiculously priced due to it's overrated rarity. Some of the prices sellers are asking for this coin you would think it'' s the bloody HOLY Grail..LOL... :taunt:

The reason why the 2000 mule commands such a high price has more to do with the fact that it is one of the best known decimal error coins and every collector wants one.
Although not incredibly Rare it is incredibly popular.

Hi Martha and Welcome to the forum.
:welcome:

It is too hard to tell what you have with the 1966 2c coin, It could be anything from a scratch to a planchet flaw.
Can you post better images that show the coin in larger detail please.

PP's coin is a true error because the paint was applied to the wrong side of the coin.
The OP's coin simply has no paint on it which is easily achieved by dipping the coin in acetone so it is impossible to prove that it is a true error coin.
It's worth $2.

Coin and Banknote Grading / RE: PCGS Grading Saflips
April 20, 2019, 09:05:09 AM
Quote from: 'runway' pid='119054' dateline='1554720231'Apparently PCGS don't use gloves when handling coins is this true?

No they don't and neither do I as a general rule But when handling Proofs or Specimen coins I always use great care and don a pair of clean cotton gloves.
I once had a batch of Silver proofs that ended up with fingerprints on them when slabbed and the ONLY place that could have happened is at PCGS during the grading process, However I had previously had hundreds of other silver proofs graded without incident.

Coin Chit Chat / RE: Am I correct with this
April 08, 2019, 08:15:35 AM
The 1966-1991 dates are correct for circulating 1c and 2c coins But there are some NCLT coins that have been minted like The 2006 and the 2016 1c and 2c NCLT coins.

+1,he might be getting the urge to collect again!!!
We have not long got back from an extended trip that included the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Kimberlie's, the Pilbara and the WA interior and were away  for about 8 months.
On our return I found that the termites had had a field day with the house so the last 2-3 months has seen me renovating the bathroom, Laundry and kitchen repairing the damage done by the little blighters.
I Have checked my coins for any damage and all seems to be in order and I am playing "Catch Up" reading various coin articles and also catching up on a bucket load of "Unread Posts".

I haven't Given up collecting and still have much of my collection, I merely downsized it, Lets see what happens.

Coin and Banknote Grading / RE: PCGS Grading Saflips
April 06, 2019, 08:30:15 AM
Quote from: 'Unicorn' pid='118510' dateline='1550533383'Reading back on earlier threads it appears that PCGS requires submissions to be in 2.5 x 2.5 inch flips. The PCGS submission info appears to confirm this.

I see that PPH sells only the 2 x 2 inch saflips and knowing that she and Mark submit coins to PCGS does anyone know for sure that they (PCGS) will remove the coins from a 2 x 2 and then put it in a 2.5 x 2.5 upon arrival or will they keep them in the 2 x 2 during the process?

I know it's an old discussion but I'm thinking about doing a submission and want to avoid risks.
I have sent hundreds of coins to PCGS and NGC in 2x2 saflips and didn't have Any dramas whatsoever.
Get some from PP and go for it, I also used to put the flips into a saflip page to give the coins extra protection when in transit so grab some of them as well.

Chin Wag / RE: Please help/advise

I have done this hundreds of times and breaking them out is the way to go.
Be super careful cracking open the slab and use minimul handling with Clean cotton gloves to put the coins into their saflips to send them away to be graded.
It only takes a minute blemish to get a proof graded harshly so be super careful handing the coins and have a real good look at each coin for defects/marks/blemishes before sending them off as there is nothing as dishartening as having one of your proofs coming back as a 67/68.
