QuoteHey Jeff, u really think they will drop the size of our coins??
•Australia, New Zealand and Fiji have always had very similar coin sizes and designs. The others changed to smaller currency (with steel cores and just a coat of the more expensive metal) some years ago to reduce costs.
•I have seen various calculations of the costs of the base metals that suggest the metal cost is approaching face value for some coins. Factor in production costs and, maybe, it is getting close to the point at which minting  current design coins will become a losing proposition.
I am sure the Mint and the Government will not want that.
•But, against this is the fact that the cheaper, steel cored coins are patented by the Royal Canadian mint. Probably not wanted to farm out Australian coin production to Canada or have to pay a royalty fee to produce them in  Australia by that process.
However other, laminated coins are made in several countries (notably USA) so alternate processes are available.

Your guess is as good as mine but, I think, the 5¢ is a goner anyway just because of minimal effective value of it now.

Jeff
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

we did ask the RAM CEO last year about the 5c rumors
he said (at that time) that there wasn't any plan to get rid of the 5c and that profits were still enough to make the coin viable
hence the cascading 5c staircase at the RAM

Many vending and other coin operated machines no longer take 5c coins. There is also very very few items/units that can be purchased for 5c alone. Its only a matter of time before it goes. Its only a matter of time before the coins get smaller as well IMO. I have a feeling it will happen with the change of monarch.

That's what I find most annoying about it.
Instead, bank tellers have to restrain their displeasure when I turn up with bags of 5c pieces.

Davidium

That's alright Ausjack, this is an open forum.

Just wondering if anyone gets their thinking caps on and thinks about the next commemorative 50 cent release will be??

Circulation though

Australian coin

hmm no commemorative CIRCULATION 50c for a while, there are a few NCLT coming up
2013 50c Copper and Nickel Coin - 100 Years of Commonwealth Stamps (MAY)
2013 50c Copper and Nickel Coin - Centenary of Australian Bank Notes One Pound Note

I have a fair idea what will be commemorated in 2016.

Yes another round silver 50 cents would be nice, the last one was in 2006.

I only have 4 round 50 cents in my album;
1966 business strike
1966 business strike double bar
1966 proof
2006 proof

All with the same reverse another one would b great :good:

Yes![/color] 2016, 50th anniversary of decimal; round silver 50¢ with commemorative reverse.
Would you buy one of those? (If your answer is "no" then you are in the wrong forum you Philistine.)

Maybe they could even consider a specially issued dollar bill. Could even feature "Dollar Bill" but, that might be going too far. A silver dollar (like a miniature note design), similar to the $10 they did a while back, would be nice.

Just wondering if the mint is going to continue with its hypermetallic and gold plated coins in next years mint and proof sets.
Would be nice that the 20 cent and fifty cent coins were commemorative issues and treated this way instead of just the standard designs :dance2:

o I bet they will milk that cow for all its worth, expect them to cover the 10c, 5c, with coloured and guiled versions, then they will think of something to do with the $1 and $2 coins in mint and proof sets.

anyway because I can >> check out the a and c counter stamp 50c
