Out of interest, you should do a noodle of them, just to see what dates are showing up the most. I know in your country the old Kiwi 5c, 10c, 20c are common as (Hilarious as it was nearly 20 years ago we stopped using them here, Australia needs to join the 21st century and bring in some reduced size steel coins like the rest of the world and Pacific), but 50s are not as ours were very different to your pocket killers.

My guess is you will have a lot of these dates, 1967 (Mostly cloudy and worn),1975, 1978, 1980, 81, 82, 87, 02, 03, 04.

When I get around to it I'll try to keep count. Definitely saw a LOT of 1967 ones.

Somewhere along the way I managed to stuff up my tick sheet. That is what you get when not marking each one immediately.
The good news for you Steve is I have all four of your standard missing years, in some cases way too many.
Here is the count Tane.
1967 - 107
1968 - 2
1971 - 14
1972 - 12
1973 - 21
1974 - 13
1975 - 29
1976 - 18
1977 - 7
1978 - 4
1979 - 7
1980 - 19
1981 - 4
1982 - 18
1984 - 2
1985 - 1
1986 - 12
1987 - 5
1988 - 11
2001 - 5
2002 - 3
2003 - 1
By that count (315)  but unless I have bagged incorrectly I should have 319 as I have $159.50 in coins.
Poor handling practices.
Anyway Steve I propose to send you $7.50 in coins.
5 x 1986 ones, I've taken obviously bad ones out. 7 x 1979 ones.
Both 1984 ones and the only 2003 one. That way, rather than choose ones that are crap, you can pick the best for yourself.
How's that sound?

Hi Gweidon.

Those figures about line up with mintages and yet you are lucky to have a lot of 1971 - 76 coins as those dates were hard to find by the 2000s.

Just for you - here are the circulation figures for those years rounded to nearest 100k (to save typing time).
Absence of year means none were issued for circulation, but 10 - 50k coins appeared in proof and uncirculated sets all years 1967 to 2006.
Figures from 2025 John Bertrand Catalogue of NZ coins.

1967 - 10.3m  - Check them for dots above the 1 in 1967, these are worth $20 in average condition and $100 in UNC.
1968 - none but 75k in sets (35k standard, 40k polished)
1971 - 1.1m
1972 - 1.4m
1973 - 2.6m
1974 - 1.2m
1975 - 3.8m
1976 - 2.0m
1977 - 2.0m
1978 - 2.0m
1979 - 2.4m
Numbers were low before 1980 except for first year 1967 and 1975

1980 - 8.0m
1981 - 4.0m
1982 - 6.0m
1984 - 2.0m
1985 - 2.0m 1984 and 1985 were low quality Canadian mintage with flat relief
1986 - 5.2m new Maklouf effigy of Queen
1987 - 3.6m
1988 - 8.8m (Drip fed out through the 1990s)
13 year hiatus of minting, I remember 1988 as latest 50c all through the 1990s

2001 - 5.0m Ian Rank Broadley effigy of queen.
2002 - 3.0m
2003 - 2.5m
2004 - 2.0m
2005 - 1.0m (503,800 released into circulation)
2006 - None except 5k in sets and aluminium bronze ones for a Narnia coin set.
2006 - 70.2m (Small sized coins made out of steel).

These numbers seem low, but bear in mind NZ had only between 2.5 and 4 million in this period.

Dang, that means I'll have to go through them all again checking for the 1967 ones with a dot. I don't suppose you'd have a picture of what I'm looking for?
Thanks Tane.

Thank you soooooo much, Daniel. That is very much appreciated.
As the "Little Budgie" once sang, " I should be so lucky. Lucky. lucky. lucky."

Here's what to look for on the 1967 coins. Happy hunting.

Cheers

Yes, not exactly, just look at the photo below, the first coin on the left, just look above the 1 in "1967" you will see a big dot there. You can't miss it.

Um, Tane, those coins shown are 1988 and 2002 and I can only see the obverse. I'll work off Steve's picture.

Sorry was a brainfart on my part. I thought I had an image of a 1967 50 cent coin with the dot, but was wrong and someone else managed to get one in, whilst I was posting.

It was posted a few hours earlier, but I did not see the post as for some reason it does not show any posts since your last automatically if there is just one on a new page.

Good coins and photos Steve.

Your 1984 shows very well, the very weak portrait and strike we had on the coins of that year and 1985, these were minted in Canada and lacked the depth of the earlier Machin portrait of the Queen from coins minted at Llantrisant and in Canberra, Australia in some years.

Although if you find 1984 and 1985 dated coins that have the old more detailed style of portrait and date, they are from the sets, as these coins were still minted in Canberra, Australia and used the older dies with the deeper relief Lizzie portrait.

Yes, I have noticed with coins from Canada, that they are very shallow relief.
Their own coins are very thin compared to ours.

Nice selection.
There 2 varieties of the 2014 20c, wide & narrow date.
Check this link and it will show you the difference...

Hmm, doesn't appear to be a lot of interest in the narrow date, even though the frequency of discovery seems less. I'm not going to collect them, I'll just spend them when we go there in a few years (if I live that long).
