Overnight the Royal Australian Mint announced the theme of the 2023 Mint/Proof sets.
Both sets will feature a $1 Coloured Vegemite themed design.

These coins will have the Queen Effigy on them.

The UK has started minting the first coins with King Charles II on them and are planning on releasing them in December.

You mean, I have one more set to complete my QE II set of coins?  And I thought I was finished, waaaa

I think that Vegemite themed design is a missed opportunity for the last set of coins with QE II on them.

I thought that was a poor April Fool's joke.

No that the 2023 mint sets would still feature Queen Elizabeth II.

Was on their Facebook page some time back.

Purple Penny Facebook site had it up a few weeks ago to say that the 2023 sets had the Queen Elizabeth 11.

I'd assume everyone here gets the mint magazine

There\'s no such thing as too much Borobi!

Is it just me or does anyone else find that mug in the top right corner a little bit eww.

Haven't had mine turn up in the post yet but it could be one of AusPost's non deliverable days in my area.
They only work every other day.

Fairly disappointed that RAM would think that commemorating Vegemite would be worth doing the year set.
I hope the coin smells and tastes like it to make it "all the better".

The RAM told me they have stopped sending the Mint Issues in the mail and you have to read it online.

gweidion

Well I got mine in the post today.

I haven't had one delivered to me in years.

And I agree - the plain old mint set was great.

Greetings fellow coin people,

I reviewed the RAM Annual Report and noticed it appears no 2023 coins were minted for general circulation, except for a few featuring King Charles III.
It also said that 120,000 of the 2023 Vegemite Mint Sets were produced.

Does this mean the only way to obtain 2023 coins (excluding the King Charles III versions) is through these Mint Sets?

What are people's thoughts on the potential for these sets to increase in value? Right now, prices seem fairly reasonable, but 120k is a significant production run and may keep the price down.

I think I heard that when QE2 came in there was a thought that the last of her fathers coins could be rare, but I don't think that this ever was the case.

Love to hear your thoughts!

My estimation is there are about 10 to 20 thousand legitimate coin collectors in Australia. The rest are speculators pushing the prices up. Every legitimate collector should be able to get these at any time near their issue price.
RAM only used to produce about 10,000 to 15,000 coin issues until the speculators started snapping them up and collectors complained so RAM increased its production. One hundred and twenty thousand is a stupidly large amount.
If they produce 30,000 they have trouble selling out. If you have a couple that is probably enough for any legitimate collector.
I'd suggest trying to get a couple of extra 2021 mint sets. Not for the aboriginal flag either. The prices on eBay are around issue price.

I also expect the numbers of legitimate collectors to go down, prices are unsustainable. It is currently like a ponzi scheme. I'm virtually buying no issues these days unless for a personal interest. My wife has a fleeting interest. I bought her a Countdown 50th anniversary coin because she loved Countdown. Mostly I'm not buying any of these anymore.

Mister T

Wow, I didn't realise the mint set mintages had got so high.

gweidion

They did this previously in the early 1980's as well. There were HEAPS for 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983. Even till the mid 2000s they were selling for not much more than original. By about 87 they were scaling back because they had a lot unsold. They don't learn lessons from the past though.

Mister T

Yeah okay, I haven't looked that closely. Seems like in the past there have been a few years that have been higher priced than you'd expect.

Generally that is because of a short run of a specific denomination.
2011 for example. Only 1.8 million $2 coins. Big premium on the mint set.
2012, 2013 and 2014 all had those "special" metalicized coin issues. They all went ballistic.

1991 used to run at a significant premium because there weren't many circulating coins issued. Only the 5 cent had reasonable mintage.
