Thanks for thoughts Mike and frenc11 and thanks Mike for the work in listing the "mintmarked" dollars. My goodness. Now I know why I gave up collecting coins about the year 2000! I started referring to dollars and twodollars as "shirt buttons" only lacking the holes to sow them in!
 That's a hellish number of coins to collect and no wonder poor sods like Greg Mac go out of their mind trying to keep up with it in a catalogue.

I applaud the Mint guys for providing work for aussies and trying to run a profitable organisation but really as a country we don't need any more coins for circulation. The only way they can create a demand now is to withdraw older dated currency on the pretext that's its "worn". But really I still see 1966 coins that are viable with bugger all wear, that copper nickel mix is pretty tough. Usage of coin is in freefall despite the optimistic mint reports, the biggest customers at banks must be noodlers!  We still have a few local shopkeepers that don't have eftpos and are cash only but most transactions are card or direct transfer now. ooops I got a bit off topic there..................


Back to the "mintmark" topic, i'll have to think about the definitions as bit more...............................

There are some where the mintage is not yet known but of the ones that are known the 2013 Bi-Centenary of the Holey Dollar (B) Counterstamp is the lowest Mintage at 2,403.

Closely followed by the 2016 Australia's First Mints (B) Counterstamp at 2,504.

The Highest Mintage is the recent 2019 MOR Dollar Discovery Privymarked [A], , coins at a reported 1,000,000 each.

If you discount the Dollar Discovery coins the 1996 Sir Henry Parkes "C" Mintmark at 252,860 is the highest Mintage.

Without detracting, for new collectors or those who may not be aware, may I just point out that for years 2002 to 2007 the list refers to B,M,S etc as only being counter stamps, where in fact the vast majority were minted on the internal production presses and fully struck up, and were then known as mint marks, what we today would call Privy marks. 

The true counter stamped coins had the B,M,S etc added by a punch via the mobile press at various shows and events just as they are today, and can only be identified by the characteristics of the strike, ie very weak, heavy or lacking uniformity. The 2002 and maybe 2003 coins in particular had weak strikes. 

It was a great move by the RAM in 2008 when they removed all confusion by individualising Mint Marks (raised letter in field), Privy Marks (incuse letter on raised block in field) and Counter Stamps (incuse letter in field).

Yes I get what you are saying Autocoupler ... It can get very confusing as to what to describe them based on how the "Mark/stamp" is applied, what type it is, when it was done and where it was done.

For my own sanity and simplification, (and to make sure I haven't missed collecting any) I have decided to describe them all no matter when or where they were made based on the type of Mark they have. That is if it is just a raised letter in field its a Mintmark, if it is a letter in a raised block in field (Usually a square) its a Privymark, if its a letter incuse in field (Usually in a circle) its a Counterstamp.

That's also why I use " " for Mintmarks, [ ] for Privymarks & ( ) for Counterstamps .... With a Letter inside it of course.

I find this whole part of collecting coins very interesting and when I first started to collect $1 coins I wanted one of each coin. Then I found out there were others with Mintmarks, then lo and behold there were others with different Privy marks released in different folders etc. Then I noticed Counterstamps lol. Took me a lot of searching and tracking down but I eventually got at least one of each.
