Mister T

Still here, wondering why everyone went quiet (and also keeping an eye on Coin Community and http://www.predecimal.com/forum/index.php).

Yeah, very quiet the last Month or so,hardly any new Posts.
I'm in the same boat as regards time but hope to get back into it later in the year,i still visit almost every day.
Forums need regular Posters to keep it humming along,AJ & Trout used to do that here previously.
I've had a lot on with my odd jobs so no noodling or bought a coin for ages. I've been given 12 months to get some of the bigger jobs done so we can use the garage so ATM I'm putting up a fence so that clears the BBQ area so I can then fill it in to be used as a shed and then I can get back into noodling etc.
A wise person knows there is something to learn from everyone.

Look in most days but haven't done much in the way of coins lately apart from a 1925 broken leg of N penny in VF.

Oh yeah, back before Xmas I did have a brush with an excellent 1919 double dot penny on ebay that would easily go XF45 in my opinion, didn't get it but I suspect a fellow forum member did, but he aint fessing up

Been spending most of my hours lately in the dream time of model railways, but not much happening in the way of starting a layout, too many interests, so I figure something has to give.

To further complicate my life, I acquired an engine lathe a couple of months back, and have been spending time revisiting some old skills, or should I say, skills I never possessed

The old saying "practice  makes perfect" (or at least better) would most likely apply there. I set up my lathe in the shed shared with my son and he has since stacked up so much stuff I can't even get to it to give it a good try. :banned:

he he my daughter would do the same if I wasn't so "selfish and inconsiderate" That's not what she says, it's what I admit to

The advances in machine tooling was the big eye opener. Back in 1972 I worked in a machine shop for a short period and only had experience with mild steel, cast iron and brass. We ground our own tooling from blanks of tool steel or high speed steel, and if something harder was needed you sweated a tungsten tip on the end. These days tool holders come with a batch of multy edge screw on tips, so too many years in the wilderness for me, and I have a project in mind that requires some stainless machining, hmmm could be interesting, but fun  :yahoo:

I have drilled stainless and it's a slow process. Need lots of lubrication/cooling otherwise a HSS tip overheats very quickly. Punch would be better but, if using screw together hand punches, you still need a pilot hole.

So true! Just yesterday I drilled some 6mm stainless in the drill press, but ran the drill at half recommended speed and used some tapping compound as lubricant, worked a treat.

Looks like you are getting there Kel. You can teach an old dog new tricks; it just takes time.
