Looks less chaotic than the swap day last year.

Little kids all holding clamshell boxes. 1st 100 coins of the year don't get a cool box do they?
Cant imagine people are rushing to buy their little ones $60 convict era silver proof coins.

Maybe they see it as an investment opportunity. Buy a $60 coin for your kid right now, and they'll sell it for $600 in 10 or 15 years time. Then that's $540 you don't have to spend on them in the future, when they want to buy a car or go to uni. :winkextra:

Yeah, I suppose. Though maybe they should buy their kid a copy The Barefoot Investor, rather than a coin. ;)

I literally just bought a 2006 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Silver Proof $5 coin.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2006-5-Melb-Commonwealth-Games-Queens-Baton-Relay-Silver-Proof-Coin/231288781687?hash=item35d9e2bb77:g:yRgAAOSwQItTzeKQ

Original price of issue (2006): $68.50
Price just paid (2018): $26.96    (Buy it Now of $29.95, with an ebay 10% dicount [new10])

Yes, the mintage is twice what the new coin is (5,000 vs 9,100), but there is also triple the silver content in the 2006 coin (11.66g vs 36.31g).

These newer coins seem like they'll be an even poorer investment than the older ones!!

:i_agree: Otherwise, it will be like playing the lottery.

brismike

But why would you want 5 pieces of cardboard with the same coin in it?

Mike
Australian Decimal, UK Decimal, USA & Euro Coins are what I collect.

Hercules

It's a money-making scheme. Some collectors just have to have every different kind of official packaging a coin was sold in. Having all five with different original packaging ought to attract a premium over having all five with the same packaging, but as far as I'm concerned, this is just the mint trying to get us all to pay five times for the same coin. This doesn't bother me, however, because it's helping to subsidise this year's 5c production run. The more money they make from collector's items, the less they'll feel the need to cull the 5c coin, which will mean more 5c noodling for many years to come. :ok:

The 50c gold plated Commonwealth Games coins have a limit of 3 per order.

So this is going to go from looking at mintage figures to work out which coins are rare to working out which packaging is rare.

Maybe the RAM should be renamed the RAP. Royal Australian Printers.

Perhaps ....... Canberran Royal Australian Printers ..... :whistle2:

I sent an email to the RAM re the cards/folders for the MYO coins and this is there response:

There are five cards for the 2018 Gallery Press coin with each representing different characters. The characters are Ann Mash, Esther Abrahams Johnston, James 'Durramboi' Davis, Alexander Pearce and John Boyle O'Reilly.

Please note that the cards are packed into the machine at random so there is no way we can guarantee a particular character will be available on a specific date. However, all characters have been released and are available throughout 2018.

Kind Regards

Royal Australian Mint

So it would appear that if you want all five cards/folders, one could spend a lot of money over and above the cost of five MYO coins to secure a full set of cards/folders.

Hmm, shall I continue:   That is THE question?

Probably cheaper to buy them on ebay. Surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) they are going for $8 each and you can select the characters you want. Some dealers have hundreds of them.
