Probably this...

Indeed that coin. Just did my research, it is actually the first NZ 10c, just with the shilling inscription on it (as they had the same value).

Not really... NZ had nearly 18 months to observe what happened with our decimalisation, and they obviously figured keeping the 'old money' on the new coins would ease the transition. We had quite a lot of trouble with our senior citizens complaining about these new fangled things in their purses, especially with the 50¢ coins, which they often mistook for 20¢. This is why they were replaced with the dodecagonal coins a couple of years later.

I always thought it was that silver price had risen making them uneconomic to produce. New Zealand stuck with the same size round 50¢ (copper/nickel, not silver) and they didn't seem to have any confusion.
Australian round fifty-cent coin

Edit. Upon reflection I think Fulvio is right -shape was changed to avoid confusion and also material was changed because of cost of silver. That is why no 50¢ coins were issued to circulation in 1967; apparently the mint started production of round coins but it was cancelled that year.
Thinking is dangerous, it makes you think. That\'s why many people avoid it.

I think it was both, they wanted to remove the silver form circulation, and remove the confusion with the coin. So a change in shape would do both.

I got a 1952 NZ sixpence the other day searching through 5c coins. A few days later a 1945 Australian sixpence.

I just opened an Armaguard $1 roll which included a New Zealand 50¢!

That's why I stopped getting coins from NAB as it was happening far to often and the one's that really annoyed me were the small denomination asian coins in $2 rolls so now I only take coins to the NAB.

And I prefer a NZ 50 cent than a yank quarter :winkextra:

I found 3 foreign coins in one bag of 10c coins at work recently.
I don't mind that, except already had them all. :(

I may have mentioned this previously, but many years ago a friend who had a bread run was sorting his change bag and found a gold Russian 5 Rouble coin that had been passed as a $2 coin; he gave it to me :yahoo:
As we age we lose three things, one is our memory and arrrrr I've forgotten the other two!

So how did their coin sorting machines make that sort of blunder? I doubt that NZ would strike a coin of the same (or even similar) diameter, thickness and metal composition as their nearest neighbour so does Armaguard set their tolerances very laxly?

ausjack

Yes very, from the coins I've seen in their rolls Neal :dash1:

Sounds illegal.

ausjack

You'd think it would be but what authority cares as the banks are a law unto them selves. I have posted pic's before of $1 rolls with a US quarter and that happens quite a bit with out going into all the other denominations.
