.....with emails to/from from people with hotmail Accounts.

I have some of my messages to/from a hotmail A/C user end up in the 'ether', so to speak.

Everything was OK until the last week of April, and since then pftttt.....

Steve T, please check your PM's, I figured this might be the only way I have to contact you until the problem is sorted out.

Ahhh.. HotFAIL strikes again!

This has been an issue pretty much since Microslop bought them years ago. They have a policy on all their services which is quite different to reputable email providers like Apple, Google, etc.

Hotmail, MSN, Live, and all the rest of MS's services suffer from this. Where everybody else puts suspect messages into a Junk or Spam folder, MS has decided to read every email, score it, and if it meets certain criteria, bounce it and delete it WITHOUT TELLING THE RECIPIENT! One of those criteria was that they decided that Optus was a spam domain. WTF???? So if all you have is an MS address, you have no way of contacting the person to tell them you can't contact them.

This is why I keep telling people to ditch their MS accounts and get proper email services. I personally use icloud.com, which anyone with an Apple device is offered by default when setting it up. I have gmail too, but rarely use it. Yahoo I'm not a fan of, but lots of friends are there. And paid services like pobox.com are super reliable (for a whole $15 a year). What I don't recommend is ISP emails, because they tie you down. Change providers and you lose your email addresses. :(

Yeah, all part of the 2016 'war on terror' from what i can glean but individuals should still get Emails thou. even if they do end up in their Junk mail folder.Only Emails that get blanket rejection are those with known bugs but in reality who knows what current protocols are.

And that's the problem.

Microslop takes it upon themselves to make up arbitrary rules and not tell anyone. So people sign up and don't even realise their mail is being tampered with. I've been writing about this since at least 2008, and if anything its getting worse. Here's a snippet from a recent bounce:

"Mail rejected by Outlook for policy reasons. We generally do not accept email from dynamic IP's as they are not typically used to deliver unauthenticated SMTP email to an Internet mail server. If you are not an email/network admin please contact your Email/Internet Service Provider for help. http://www.spamhaus.org maintains lists of dynamic and residential IP addresses."

Once you get onto their IP blacklist, there's really nothing you can do to get off it. Other than change ISP. Or, better yet, convince everyone else to ditch their crap email provider. ;)

Exactly why I chose to use Hotmail and up until now I have had no problems (that I know about). I'm still getting plenty of e-mails from other sources.

Nancy I have replied to your PM, thanks.

Yeah, that's the problem. I can handle, albeit grudgingly, being told that a given service is going to be degraded or whatever. Its the lack of communication that is unforgivable. By the time you find out, the damage is done. :(

I use hotmail and yesterday for some reason it was blocking 50% of emails from my work email with a 554 transaction failed error.  It has me stumped why it only blocked every second email and why it would be blocking emails from KBR (which should not be on a black list).  It seems to be working now though.

It's still possible to keep your email address when changing ISPs. I use the same ozemail address I started in 1994, even though ozemail as an individual entity doesn't exist any more, and I've been through a range of ISPs in the interim.

It used to be free, but now they (iiNet) charge $25pa for a mailbox. Still good value.

That depends on the ISP.

There's nothing magical about email addresses. EVERY domain you register can have a full range of services, not just http://. So you could register jrg.com.au (assuming it was available), and run mail on it, with addresses like fulvio@jrg.com.au. This is not a problem, and relatively easy to set up.

The problem comes along when something changes. I stop being a client, or our friendship breaks up, or I leave my job with the company, or whatever. At that point, someone goes and deletes my account. Which makes sense if it was a work email, since obviously I no longer speak for the company. And when it comes to an ISP, I've stopped being a customer, and therefore why should I get something for nothing, right?

Of course, the actual cost of providing email is really, really tiny. So if you charge even a couple of bucks a year, its basically all profit (leaving aside the standing costs, of course). So yeah, some businesses may choose to charge a small fee, or some organisations may provide free services (works for Google, Apple, etc), but it really depends on what they choose to do, which depends on their vested interests.

I read where the Federal Govt.(at least a security consultant for them) suspects the Chinese are using Oz. as a test bed for their Cyber Warfare program so who knows whats going on as far as Email traffic goes,ISP would have protocols in place to protect their interests you would think.

Hah!

Have a look here for some insights into how the world really works. Yes, this was 25 years ago, but nothing has really changed.

I have had the same problem now, with an e-mail from AJ.
I am getting the e-mail in my inbox, but can only read it when I click reply. :(
