Odd centre hole on png shilling

I am not that familiar with these coins But this centre hole looks like it was "Drilled" after being minted.

PNG PMD? Don't they like to mount these? Maybe the hole needed to be enlarged slightly for that purpose.

I put a small collection of these together last year.
I will have to hunt them down and have a Good look at the centre holes on the other coins.
Will post other images as soon as I find the little beggers :angel:

Here is an uncirculated 1938 coin and the hole looks pretty "Smick".
I read that the hole was put there so that they could be put on strings because most of the locals were devoid of pockets to put coins in at the time.
Maybe the other 1938 coin coin wasn't drilled at all and the damage is due to wear from being "Strung" ?
Either way it has to be PMD and it may be a good indicator for wear when grading this particular issue .

That is it, they hung the coins around the neck. I wouldn't think the centre hole in the OP coin was worn too much, the rest of the coin looks to be in pretty good nick. Maybe this coin was hung from a thick piece of wire or something like that.

Those holes are punched prior to minting.  r9453 is probably correct regarding the damage to your coin, hung from wire.

The other coin that they like to mount onto/around a waist belt is the $1 Kina coin.

Anything with a hole in it, especially currency, will be worn somewhere on there clothing.

[attachment=3491]Hi I trekked KOKODA top to bottom along the way met up with a 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel', as can be seen he had coins, keys, drapped from a leather cord. Metal lanyard on wire held treasures together, obscured but a stack of shillings. No I didn't offer to buy any obliged with I think obout 20 kina for a photo. Regards ErikP

I blame poor quality finishing, several of mine have narrow holes and thin flakes.
I have also noticed this on Fijian holed pennies and halfpence, mostly wartime and earlier coins.
